13.3 is the last free version, to get 14.0 you need to pay $15
The idea of the game is to put shit into space.
Here's my attempts:
My first orbit, non-equatorial and high eccentricity but i was happy to have finally got something up and have it stay up.
Image

Fast forward a couple of weeks of not playing and:

My most successful design to date, she can get to orbit easily and with fuel to spare. Though I'm still tweaking her with hopes of getting to the moon.
Image
On one mission I found my self in a orbit with a very low inclination and with significant fuel; So I decided to give the moon a shot.
I managed to get the mission stage onto a orbit that cross the path of the moon.
However I forgot to check where the moon would be when I arrived.
Image

The moon was in just the wrong place, I got thrown round and chucked away.

and ended up orbiting the sun.

So anybody else tried to get kerbals to space?

Gaaaah this is awesome!!! For now, I'm just having fun making things crash interestingly... I've come close to getting into orbit but all the rockets I made were heavy monstrosities anyways...

Okay, so it looks like I finally got myself a collision course with The Sun. It's hard to leave the atmosphere!

This is an awesome game! I especially love the Kerbals in the corner of the screen screaming in terror whilst Jeb just smiles.

FUCK YES!!!

Finally crashed into the moon :boss:

And no, parachutes do NOT work on the moon. I'm thinking about building a moon lander as my top section though...

I managed to make my crew orbit the sun. After 54 days everyone except Jeb was still screaming.

oh wow, bob is such a pessimist though.
I managed to get two different ships crashlanded on the moon. the first blew up entirely, and the second destroyed it's only engine on landing.

either way, it is amazing fun, I'm sort of switching around between making shit blow up randomly and attempting to get to the moon and back.

best design of mine? a 3 stage ship using only solid boosters, that gets of the first two stages by blowing them up one at a time.

Okay, so I can pretty consistently orbit the moon and land back on earth now! One design uses a fat stack of twelve liquid engine thrusters, followed by two stages of solid thrusters with a long-range "orbiter craft" on top. I called it The Nutsack.

well...
had just made a vessel capable of a moon orbit and return to kerbin.
figuring I could use another stage for a lunar landing mission, I attached one.

lift-off, everything is perfectly fine, the ships doesn't seem unstable.
until, it reaches 900m and the boosters begin to resonate.
at 1400 the vibration became large enough that it violently self-destructed.

damn... didn't know that was also a valid mode of failure.

It's hilarious when you panic and release solid boosters only to have them immediately fly up and then arc right into your ship's midsection resulting in a huge explosion.

One time I did that and, instead of blowing the entire ship up, I actually managed to hold onto two of my engines AND successfully parachute back down!

Will struts help stop the resonating? I too am still working on making a moon lander... I think I've got the right top section, but i'm having trouble making a good enough mid-section and bottom.

Yeah, struts stop the resonating.
however, I found it hilarious enough that I saved it that way anyway.

the strutted version can get me landed on the moon and back, if I fly it well enough and don't crash into it instead.

And here's something really really awesome somebody did:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZpoG5K5nQU

Rescue from orbit? Yeah kinda cool.

How about FROM THE MUN!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-li5fgUOGXU
(no travel sadly, though heavy lifter to mun is not hard to build, and this craft lacks parachutes so it has to land with rockets...FUN)
