Basically, I'd built these drop pods awhile ago but decided that they were too big so I redesigned them as fighters

I'll be honest. My first thought was "gee, that's pretty lame."
My second thought was "still looks more like a drop pod."
Until I wound up with: "I wonder how fifty of those would look swarming a battlecruiser."
Conclusion: Awesome! Make more!

yeah, I used these because I had 8 drop pods.  The problem is they use some specialty parts so I need to make a bricklink order.  Also, they need a base right?  I'm planning a carrier for them

needs more guns and missiles.

If you want to mass produce a unit I would suggest trying to only use common parts, or bricklink it. Personally I use common and have a bit of variation between units to save on briks.
