Random Battle for the Random Pass

Post by IX_Legion » Wed Jan 02, 2013 10:59 am

Note: despite using a couple of the same armies, this is not a sequel to my earlier "Battle for the Pyramid" (which will hopefully be coming soon). This was a quick, "let's throw some armies together" battle.

Image
The Imperial army, drawn up in battle formation at the Random Pass.

Image
The army of the undead strung out before them.

Image
A group of Dwarves holds the Imperial right flank.

Image
Imperial troops in the center, crossbowmen to the front. The guy on the horse is a hero, but I forgot about him for a few turns, and when he finally tried to do something he died pretty ignominiously.

Image
And on the left, Roman legionnaires.

Image
The mummies, massed opposite the legionnaires.

Image
Skeletons and zombies, positioned to smash into the Imperial troops and Dwarves.

Image
Some of the more intelligent undead opposite the Imperial right. A ghoul, two wraiths, and two cursed warriors.

Image
The undead shamble forward, as undead are wont to do.

Image
First attack, ghoul vs. dwarf.

Image
That looks painful...

Image
Imperial crossbowmen let loose a volley before retreating behind their melee armed comrades. One skeleton down...

Image
Dwarves advance to contact...

Image
Both cursed warriors attack a solitary dwarf...

Image
...with predictable results.

Image
Skeletons push forward as the ghoul claims another life.

Image
The mummies move forward in considerably better order. They're the best undead troops, and I've placed them opposite the best Imperial troops.

Image
Continued fighting on the Imperial right. The dwarves are looking a little thin, though more skeletons are down...

Image
The first rank of legionnaires ready their pila to throw.

Image
One kill! They draw their gladii.

Image
Crossbowmen reload.

Image
The knight, remembering that he is a hero and should be doing something heroic, leaps into battle against the cursed warriors.

Image
He is promptly de-horsed.

Image
The undead press forward. It looks like another dwarf down. That can't be good.

Image
Skeletons smash into the Imperial lines. The results are obvious.

Image
And the mummies reach the legionnaires, as the second rank draw back their own pila.

Image
Two die on the front rank's sword-points.

Image
The hero gets up and dusts himself off. The crossbowmen aim a volley at the wraiths.

Image
One down.

Image
More fighting here. The skeletons are nearly gone, but there are zombies right behind them...

Image
The Imperial infantry counterattacks!

Image
At the same time, the first two ranks of legionnaires advance, as the rear rank prepares the final volley of pila.

Image
More dead mummies, again by gladius rather than pilum. Odd how those javelins are never quite as effective as one might hope.

Image
The hero comes under attack from a cursed warrior and a wraith.

Image
There goes the last wraith. The hero did something! Finally! Their bodies and their horses dissolve into mist.

Image
The undead start to overwhelm the dwarves.

Image
Mummies press the attack, but the legionnaires hold.

Image
The mummy chariot decides to get in on the action. Two legionnaires bail out of the way as the mummy swings his sword for the attack.

Image
Both attack and counterattack miss, and the chariot begins to come back around for another pass.

Image
The hero tries a feat, swinging his blade down to decapitate the cursebearer.

Image
Deflected! :byzero:

Image
A dwarf cuts down the other cursebearer, but their entire center is gone. Undead pour through the gap.

Image
They reach the Imperial lines. The soldiers are dying pretty quickly.

Image
Legionnaires advance, pushing back the last mummies. Two move toward the chariot (I think those are the two that were knocked down).

Image
Skeleton crossbowmen bring down the warhammer-wielding dwarf.

Image
The cursebearer whacks away at the hero, to no avail.

Image
The last dwarf, along with another Imperial soldier, is down. Aforementioned gap just widened.

Image
The Roman officer is beheaded.

Image
The crossbowmen reload as the charioteer misses one with his sword.

Image
The hero tries another feat, which involves shoving the cursed warrior away.

Image
It fails like the last one.

Image
A volley of bolts slams into the cursebearer. He is not affected.

Image
OM NOM NOM

Image
Can't remember if it's the mummies or the Romans attacking here. Doesn't really matter, mummies are dying. A few Romans are down, though.

Image
The undead press forward, and a skeleton kills a crossbowman. The hero is attacked again, but survives.

Image
The last mummies attack, only to be skewered on the Roman gladii.

Image
Did I mention that the mummy's demon-horse can breathe fire? Well, he can. Finally, the hero is dead.

Image
Wait, wasn't he dead a moment ago? last I saw, a zombie was gnawing on him... Oh crap.

Image
The crossbowmen throw down their weapons. What is this? Cowardice?

Image
Nope. Rearming.

Image
One is killed as he passes a skeleton.

Image
Once more, the Imperial troops press forward.

Image
Legionnaires attack, but the last foot-mummy just won't die.

Image
The undead continue their mindless shamble forward.

Image
Well, at least he won't be rising as a zombie later on...

Image
Trading kill for kill.

Image
Finally, the mummies are down (except for the one on the chariot). The legion can now come to the aid of their hard-pressed comrades.

Image
General undead advance. Don't mind the flames coming out of the horse's mouth, I just forgot to take out the flame piece.

Image
There's that cursed warrior again, killing more Imperials.

Image
The legionnaires form up with the two rearmed crossbowmen, presenting a formidable shield wall to the undead horde.

Image
The mummy charioteer senses an opportunity. Before the Imperial troops close up into an impenetrable circle, he dashes in and beheads a Roman.

Image
Two legionnaires turn to face the new threat.

Image
Their armor absorbs the fire damage.

Image
Zombies begin to hit the shield wall, but it holds.

Image
Essentially the same shot, but from a more epic angle. Pity it turned out blurry.

Image
Counterattacks lash out, but those zombies are tough. There is a skeleton leaking around the edge of the line.

Image
The charioteer attacks to no avail.

Image
Oh crap.

Image
Well, that sucks. MORE zombies.

Image
Several go down at the shield wall. More keep coming, though.

Image
The charioteer disengages and loops around.

Image
And the zombies renew their assault.

Image
Imperial troops push forward, and the last cursed warrior is down.

Image
"Um, Bill, what are you doing?"

Image
"Are you sure that's a good idea?"

Image
Well. That can't be good. The legionnaire immediately begins to take damage from the cursed weapon and armor.

Image
The end of the zombie horde finally seems to be in sight, but they keep gnawing away (pun intended) at the Imperial right flank.

Image
Not this again.

Image
The charioteer charges. Again.

Image
Once again, the horse's fire breath is ineffective.

Image
Counterattacks damage the horse, but fail to kill it.

Image
Romans attack the skeleton crossbowmen.

Image
The rest go after the zombies. One more zombie down!

Image
The demon horse's fire brings down the cursebearing Roman.

Image
The charioteer attacks too, but is less useful.

Image
He isn't in combat long, though.

Image
The Imperials attack what is left of the undead horde.

Image
Doesn't look good for the nonliving...

Image
Finally, the shield wall brings down its last attacker.

Image
The last skeleton crossbowman dies in short order, too.

Image
That dang chariot comes around again.

Image
The infantry attacks the horse. Again.

Image
They fail. The chariot rides down the Imperials.

Image
That's gotta hurt. All that's left of the Imperial forces are Romans.

Image
But wait! Opportunity attack!

Image
The spear finds its mark...

Image
...and the battle is won! Imperial victory!

Image
Overwatch of the field.

Image
The dwarves' sector of the field. They died like men. Well, like dwarves. 'cause technically, you know, they're dwarves, not men. Ahem.

Image
The Romans' sector.

Image
The center, which saw perhaps the most fighting.

Image
Moral of the story: don't mess with the Romans. They will screw you up.

THE END!

Image
...

Image
That's odd...

Image
:byzero:

The end?

May want to invest in some of these: http://www.gibrick.com/accessories/cults ... -hx4s.html if you're going to play on a flat surface like that.

Simple 2X2 Lego plates make good substitutes. Smaller too, so you can conserve space for those tight, close and crowded environments.

Yeah, people falling over is a problem. I knocked over a legionnaire and, naturally, they all go down like dominoes. I'll try to pick a few up on my next pick-a-brick order.

I remember the one time I tried to set up a melee battle, I had all my King's men set up a fancy line that took me forever to set up, and then the cult hopped up and decided to nap on them. A domino effect ensued and the orcs won by default.
