I think if we have enough people just thinking about why LDD behaves the way it does, someone, somewere will notice something that will net us the performance boosts we want. If not, I'm back to building that LDD only PC.

Well, I've come to put the final nail in the coffin. As the prophetical David Bowie put it "We'll build a better gaming computer, with just a hint of mayhem, to build a better dreadnought, we'll be living from copy pasting, then we can really begin" (Or something along those lines). We'll, I built a better computer, and the result? Nada. Specs in the spoiler, but really all I've noticed is the program is slightly more responsive, in terms of placing bricks, and overall part limit, we're in the same place. For the average model, 30,000 seems to still be the magic number, load in smaller parts, or place them in smaller quantities, and you can creep higher, but all in all, more horsepower won't save us.

The Lego briks must have been manufactured between the 5th to the 15th century.
