Facebook Profile Pic?

Postby Lord Trionx » Sat Mar 15, 2014 11:07 am

I'm having an argument with my friend about if you should have an actual photo of yourself in your facebook profile or not. I'm in a job hunt for internships and in a year full-time, and I've heard from my professors that it's a good idea not to have a photo of yourself since some recruiters might discriminate based on age or something. My friend thinks that it doesn't really matter as long as you have a nice photo of yourself.

To be honest I don't care either way, but is this a thing I should actually be worried about?

Make your facebook private so they can't find you.

I can't remember the last time I was on Facebook. Probably about a year ago.

Not having a facebook became less relevant when I entered college, to a degree. There's some level of communication I miss out on, but I'm giving the site five years tops before something else displaces it.

As for personal business, you're perfectly fine with having a professional or at least a good-quality picture of yourself on your account if it's public. Just keep track of those settings on what you publish. You have to understand the relationship between public/private and how it affects what others - employers included - can read of your information and posts.

I pretty much use facebook for networking and keeping track of events only. I mostly text or use skype if I want to be social on the internet. (I had an account in high school, but I deleted it since I was really autistic way back when, and made a new one just for college. I'd imagine once I get into the workforce its going to be less relevant to me than it is now...)

Right now my privacy settings have it set so that you need to be friends with me to see everything. My cover photo and my profile pic are the only things you can still see because facebook doesn't allow you to hide them. I barely post on there except to plug stuff though, and people can't tag me without me approving it first.

Yes, you need to have a picture of you, in fact, it's best to have pictures of you, and all of your friends in groups, at parties, concerts, whatever. Forget about the NSA stockpiling them, as unless your planning an insurrection, or are a privacy freak, it doesn't really matter. The way I see it, it's a digital scrapbook, and while it may not be around forever, the writing will be on the wall to back it all up long before the last server closes.

Never trust privacy settings.

As long as you're not holding a beer can or a bong, you'll probably be fine.

If your profile pic shows you holding a beer can and a bong, then you'll only get hired at places that are cool with people whose facebook pics show them holding beer cans and bongs. Which could be either a lose or a win, depending on how you look at it.
