So I was in bed with a friendly lady last night and telling her how much better it is when you define everything by unit inches, which she (6) thought was an excellent way to judge everything in life, obviously and (7) had never heard of before, shockingly. How did I never tell her about the unit inches system?

So I explained the whole thing and how it was really just to have an excuse to have a currency symbol that looks like a Lego smiley but also riffs on the ultramarines' Ultima symbol, and I couldn't remember if I'd photoshopped up an image before, so here's that.

I especially like this Inframarine because instead of some fancy-pants Chapter Symbol on his shoulder pauldron, the Ü is now just a price tag. Inframarines, 1 Ü each.

In defense of CP, sometimes I want to have a unit with a smaller weapon for fluff reasons, which puts me at a disadvantage to someone who has given their units the biggest guns they can.
I'm starting to realize that this sounds extremely rules lawyery as I type it, but I'm going to post it anyway.

Small weapons aren't better or worse than big weapons. They're just good at different things.

If you want to make this argument for real, then you should be talking about who has more weapons. More weapons is always better than fewer weapons (of the same size, anyway).

Okay, that's a valid point.
But what about specialties like Compensating and Gunnery? What's to stop me from saying that all my units are medics, mechanics, and pilots all at once?

We can limit Specialist abuse a little bit by saying they must start the battle carrying appropriate equipment; medkits and mechaniks' tools take up hands that could have been used for weapons instead. Pilots and gunners must start in pilot seats and gunner stations. Heavies must be carrying their heavy weapon. Officers must be in sole command of their squads.

If you have enough medkits, mechaniks' tools, pilotable vehicles, gunner stations, and heavy weapons for your entire army, hats off to you.

Even if you do, you only get to choose one role for each minifig, and medkits and mechaniks' tools take up the hands you need to operate weapons and controls in any case. You'd have a bunch of super-skilled units who weren't able to do any actual fighting beyond beating on things with medkits and mechaniks' tools because their hands were full.

Now heres a dumb question.  Im a medic though so... But why hand held medkits? Ww2 they had satchels. Vietnam they had backpacks. Now we have dedicated aid bags and every soldier carries atleast one personal first aid pack some regular soldiers are even trained to do first aid to assist doc. This lets medics use rifles. Some of us even carry hand guns on top of rifles. (Not everyone gets a pistol like in cod) could we not count the tlc satchel or backpack as an aid bag?  What if we denote it with a certain color or a red cross?  We could also make it take a turn to deploy so that theres the risk of losing a minifig. That way you get a soldier medic. Blends in better. Less likely to be picked off from afar... hypothetically

Brikwars isn't meant to emulate reality. But if you want your medics to carry medkits in backpacks, I don't see why not. Hell, my space medics' medical supply is contained in their suits, thought they administer aid using a giant needle.
As for personal medical bags and soldier-assisted triage, minifigs are really dumb. A regular soldier isn't going to be able to assist a doctor because all he knows is killing.

while I agree a minifig that is unspecialized im medicine should not practice it.... still doesn't mean they couldnt carry an IFAK. But I wasnt really focused on that.  I was more focused on freeing up a medics hand so he can be a rifleman.  Not that its all that important either.  I just thought it silly how everyone seems to accept that a medic must have a 1 handed weapon n a medkit in the other hand... but it seems that its just the most common example

It's for game balance and accessibility.

If all minifigs have the same base cost (one Unit Inch), then they have to be balanced by some means other than CP adjustments. Instead, minifigs are game-balanced by the amount of stuff they can carry. A minifig is able to do two hands' worth of stuff, so any significant specialist ability needs to take up one or both hands to keep them game-balanced.

Also, players need to be able to identify minifig combat roles quickly just by looking at them, even if the players are seven years old and don't have enough minifigs to set up special uniforms and custom insignia to differentiate them. A random minifig with a rifle is a soldier, a random minifig with a medkit is a medik, no uniforms required.

How are the Unit Inches coming anyway? Any completed ideas? How many years before they get put into a rule book?
Ask now what I'm doing, even for me :mystery:
