Microspace Ruleset Recommendations

Postby Duerer » Sun May 31, 2015 4:36 pm

So, I thought about getting into hosting some microspace battles with LDD and thus, I wanted to know, what rulesets might be around here. However, as most microbattles have the awful tendency to remain unfinished, I've been looking for a ruleset, that is quite simple, yet fun to play with.
Any thoughts about or experiences with certain rulesets?

I just use regular Brikwars rules, but without building terrain.

So do I, usually.  They're versatile enough to manage it.  A shift in perspective here, a bit of fudge there, and it works out most of the time.  Terrain is good, though, if you can manage it in the form of asteroids, space debris, nebula, and the like.

However, there are also these:

I've always sort of disliked Brikspace, TBD's is really pretty solid based on the little I've experienced, and I haven't really experienced enough of Dil's to have much of an opinion (I do kind of remember talking to him about it and him mentioning that the measurements are based on the LDD overlay...dunno if that changed).

I've decided, that taking the basic BW ruleset might be the actual right choice for the sake of simplicity. However, I've also thought about categorizing the gun sizes into rough classes, determined by the length and breadth of the weapons:

1d4 - Tiny - laser cannons for starfighters or very small defense systems
1d6 - Small - Basic ship cannons of average size
1d8 - Medium - Bigger cannons, that give ships a little more punch
1d10 - Big - Huge guns, like the main weapon of a battleship; might need to cool down after one use
1d12 - Huge - Special attacks for super heavy warships; either need to cool down or one shot only

I could also assign aspecific range value to each class, but I'm not sure on that one, tho.

An example, on how I proposed to use the weapons size categorization:

So I thought about assigning 6" range to Tiny and Small guns, while Medium and Big guns have 12" range. Furthermore, I thought about some minor special rules for weapons like missiles or other non-direct-energy based weaponry. I'd be glad, if anyone might help me with figuring something out for them.

Since I built the Mass Produced Frigates to Brikspace Standards, I've always been kinda bias to it.

I like the weapon sizes idea, but I also found this wonderful thing called Kill Radius sometime ago. Didn't playtest, but it sure looks fun.
Maybe you could just simplify the movement rules and drop the whole vector thing.
