No, not really. But at the same time I want to not be completely lost as all these characters from it appear to be coming into the brikiverse.
Behold, Evangelion, the abridged horribly-simplified crappy version with an excessive focus on Angels to the detriment of everything else in the plot.
Once upon a time, there was a happy, magical land of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The year was 2000.
Then Second Impact happened, killed half the world's population, rendered Antarctica uninhabitable (as if it wasn't already) and flooded coastal areas. Humanity was displeased with this, some wars happened.
Humanity realized that making cool robots would be more productive than nuclear war, however, and formed GEHIRN (based in Tokyo-3) to create the Evangelion, a giant cyborg with an invincible plot-device shield called an AT-field (those absurdly powerful pools of hundreds of d6 worth of shields in my forum battles). People working on the project included Commander Gendo Ikari (yes, that famous magnificent bastard that abandons his son), Yui Ikari, Kozo Fuyutsuki, Kyoko Soryu and Naoko Akagi (who developed the MAGI supercomputers).
Yui and Kyoko (who happen to be Shinji's and Asuka's mothers, respectively) are absorbed into Evangelions 01 and 02, respectively. Also, Naoko kills the first clone of Rei and kills herself in horror afterwards
NERV is formed, a military organization to operate the Evas. Their headquarters is in an armored underground geofront under Tokyo-3. Important staff include Major Misato Katsuragi, operations director, and genius Dr. Ritsuko Akagi, the main scientist.
Rei Ayanami, pilot of 00, get's injured during her Eva's activation. WHEN SUDDENLY
SACHIEL, THE THIRD ANGEL, ARRIVES.
Now you see, Angels have invincible AT fields just like the Evas, so it takes an Eva to kill an Angel (they tried nuking it with a TOTALLY_NOT_NUKE_YET_NUKE_FOR_JAPAN, in case that was suggested). Which meant NERV was fucked.
Until Gendo creates a master plan and calls upon his son Shinji to pilot Eva-01. He refuses until he's guilt tripped with an injured Rei. Shinji fails utterly but the Eva goes berserk and takes out the Angel without Shinji's control. Shinji get's to live with Misato.
We are also introduced to a secret organization called SEELE, which has its own secret plans for something called the Human Instrumentality Project.
Shamshel is the lady Angel on the left with the badasses laser tentacles. Ramiel, on the right, fucks mountains for a living with his laser and drilled like a man down to NERV HQ, and nearly fried Shinji alive so they had to snipe him with a gun that used all the power of Japan. (Said Ramiel mission was also Rei's first in 00, which got better)
Shinji ran away after the Shamshel battle but came back. Around this time Shinji befriends Toji and Kensuke, the former forgiving Shinji's injuring of his sister in the Sachiel battle after seeing him fight in the Shamshel battle. After Ramiel there's some Jet Alone incident with a real giant robot and then Shinji and Misato save the day.
The pilot of Unit-02, Asuka Langley Soryu, is politely escorted to Japan by the Angel Gaghiel, a giant aircraft-carrier-sized fish. Who takes two self-destructing battleships to the mouth when he dies.
Also, Kaji the casanova and Misato's college ex appears and delivers Adam, the first Angel reduced to an embryonic state, to Gendo
This guy(s) here is(are) Israfel, which splits in two. This was Asuka and Shinji's first battle together on Japan proper, and they got pwned the first time. They then defeated it together with the power of DDR.
Sandalphon, a lava monster Angel so incompetent he got caught before he hatched. Hatches and nearly kills Asuka, when Shinji saves her.
Matarael, the weakest and most pathetic angel, who gets killed by rifle fire and utilizes crying as her main weapon. Her only saving grace is that she attacked during a blackout.
This is Sahaquiel, taking a few dozen nukes to the face like it doesn't even matter. He then tries to nuke Tokyo-3 from orbit with himself, but like in my battle is pathetically defeated by all three Evas.
Ireul, the virus Angel with an AT field and super hacking skills. Nearly destroys NERV HQ via activating its self-destruction. Ritsuko canonwanks a wankified Norton Antivirus or something to kill him.
Leliel, one of the most powerful angels but by far the laziest, shows up and is invincible because she lives in her own pocket dimension. She sucks in Shinji, does some pscyhoanalysis, before the Eva goes berserk again and kills the Angel in a bloody explosion. As a side note, it is mentioned that dropping 992 nukes into her *might* be enough to kill her.
Bardiel hijacks Evangelion-03. Shinji doesn't want to kill the pilot inside (revealed to be his best friend Toji) and so Gendo activates the Dummy Plug, a sort of AI only more vicious than GLaDOS could have ever hoped to be.
Shinji runs away again due to this.
The most badass of the Angels, Zeruel of toilet-paper-arms tanks a nuke WITHOUT his AT Field. That's right, 02 and 00 are right out. Then 01 comes out because Shinji came back (again) and gains the upper hand, loses battery, and like every time it loses power the Eva goes berserk and eats poor Zeruel, absorbing his core. Unfortunately, Shinji achieved too high of a sync ratio and got absorbed by the Eva, comes back out a month later after some psychoanalysis.
Finally, an Angel that LOOKS like an Angel! Arael shines a heavenly beam of light down upon Asuka from space, mind-räping her and utterly destroying her mentally. Rei gets to kill Arael with the Lance of Longinus, a giant red bident that can
pierce the heavens
pierce AT fields and kills the poor lady Angel. The Lance then is lost in orbit and gets stuck on the moon.
Armisael, the glowing double-helix Angel. That tentacle-räpes Rei and whines to her about loneliness. Dispatched by Rei's heroic self-destruct.
Rei, however, is seemingly alive after this incident.
Ritsuko freaks out after a humiliating SEELE meeting and destroys all the Rei clones after Rei III was made, earning Gendo's ire and a stay in the neighborhood prison.
The last Angel, our good friend Kaworu/Tabris, Angel of Free Will. Penetrates Terminal Dogma (the deepest level of NERV) where he finds not Adam, but Lilith, the Second Angel. Allows Shinji to kill him after the most legendary overly-long anime still frame of all time.
After this, there's episodes 25 and 26, which consists of psychoanalysis and finish with everyone congratulating Shinji.
There's also End of Evangelion, a movie that's also psychoanalysis punctuated with NERV HQ being invaded by the army, Asuka being a badass and...
...Third Impact, under the Human Instrumentality Project, is accomplished, gathering everyone's souls together. Shinji rejects it and it all falls apart. Stuff happens.
Oh, you asked about the characters, not the Angels (but they ARE characters, and help the development of the main three, damn it)
Shinji Ikari: Prone to running away and as a gross-oversimplification kind of a wussy, but it's like 1 in the morning here and I don't take AP Psychology. No sense of self-worth and also mommy issues.
Rei Ayanami: A girl who feels she's replaceable and again no sense of self-worth. Amazingly, has no mommy issues...due to not having a mom.
Asuka Langley Soryu: A spoiled German girl who acts mean to people she knows as apparently some sort of psychological coping mechanism. Worst mommy issues of the three.
Misato Katsuragi: Professional military officer who drinks tons of Yebisu beer at her home and a slob personally. Can't get over a relationship with Kaji back in college.
Gendo Ikari: Kind of an adult Shinji, but spends most of the series steepling his fingers and making plans.
Ritsuko Akagi: Chief scientist at NERV, has an affair with Gendo, goes batshit towards the end of the series.
