It's hard to say with anime.  Honestly, as far as recommendations go, it's very hard to tell what people are going to like, even if two shows are highly similar.

That said, if I were to group Sidonia and AoT together, I'd have to say that AoT is far superior.  There's just more happening in a given episode and it accomplishes it's basic premise well enough.  I will say, though, that Sidonia hearkens back to a classic anime feel.  If you were ever into classic space mecha type anime, Sidonia's flaws might be overshadowed by the nostalgia you might feel while watching it.  And it's got a few charming tweaks along the way which help to support the background setting and maintain interest just that little bit longer.  I'll give it a few more eps to get better before I likely grow bored and drop it.  I'd say give it the old Four Episode Rule try.

Insert_blank wrote:I also just hate shounen anime, though.

50/50 on it myself, given a set of good anime to choose from.  Sometimes the writers can pull something that offsets it just enough from the norm to keep me interested.

I think AoT pulled away from the baseline enough.  I honestly hadn't thought of it that way til you mentioned it.  Mostly because, even though I know that Eren is the MC, I had a hard time seeing it that way.  But I see where you're coming from, yeah.

Oh, I don't know about that.  Some is, sure.  A lot most assuredly isn't, though.

Silverdream wrote:What I meant when I called Knights of Sidonia "AoT in space" was the idea of humans running and trying to fight monsters much more powerful then them. Other than that there's not much in common.

I tend to agree.  Drawing similarities is a broad business.

Silverdream wrote:What I didn't like was:

-The direction (some scenes were really powerfully directed, but other scenes are directed like what's happening is so intense when it's not really intense at all)

-The pacing

-How some people treat it like the second coming

And yes.  While I liked watching AoT, for the most part, I had to take a break from it because it felt so suffocating.  I'm also not sure where the acclaim comes from.  It's solid but it's far from the best thing I've ever seen, for sure.

Oh, and another thing I liked was the lack of fanservice.

No I don't hate shounen because it's "not mature" enough. I watch Sentai and Kamen Rider and I love magical girl shows. I started watching anime when I was 6 and I'm 25 now. I've hit the saturation point on a lot of action shows. If people weren't talking about AoT saving anime I wouldn't have noticed it at all. I also didn't like Kill La Kill again because I've reached my saturation point.
A lot of hotblooded shows bother me because I've seen them before. They need to do something really cool for me to get interested. Usually even just a healthy sense of humor about itself is enough. If I started watching anime 10 years later than I did I may have really loved AoT. It's not bad it's really just that I've seen it before. Same with SAO, Magical Index, and a lot of the shows that were popular in the last 6 or so years. If you guys keep going down the line you'll always remember your first animes with rose tinted glasses and dislike the new stuff for doing the same thing, which I know is stupid but it's just how it goes.

I get that.  Like I said before, it's gotta do something different for me too, in order to stand out.

Yeah, but Attack on Titan actually has some semblance of good writing while SAO is just shit. Still, I guess we all have different opinions.

I loved the art style but what it comes down to for me is if anyone can die at any time I can't get emotionally invested. I'll cry when I watch kid shows though, so go figure.

Hence my earlier point about anime being hard to recommend.

As, for example, the fact that I liked SAO almost as much as AoT.  It wasn't terrible but it wasn't spectacular either.  It was, however, the best of it's niche genre that I've ever seen...so I suppose that counts for something to me.

I think, as with anything but perhaps moreso with anime, when you talk about anime, you almost have to break it up instead of discussing whole shows.

Yeah anime is literally just a shortening of animation in Japanese. It's not a genre it's a medium. It'd be the same if you said "I like TV but I don't enjoy the shows for teenagers. But I really enjoy the cop shows"

Evangelion Rebuild 2.0

Postby Vami IV » Tue Jul 08, 2014 8:57 am

I finally tracked down Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance on animetoon.tv.com. So far so good, but imagine if Shinji were not so much pussy, and instead a sarcastic closet perv like me or Overwatch.

Exactly what I like to hear. Unless it was EoE, which was straight shit. But I'll get there when I get there.
EMERGENCY EDIT, SPOILERS

I reached the part where Kaji was flinging the California bullshit at Shinji. Despite my worries (through the roof), listening to that scream (Shinji) was well worth it  :D
