That said, if I were to group Sidonia and AoT together, I'd have to say that AoT is far superior. There's just more happening in a given episode and it accomplishes it's basic premise well enough. I will say, though, that Sidonia hearkens back to a classic anime feel. If you were ever into classic space mecha type anime, Sidonia's flaws might be overshadowed by the nostalgia you might feel while watching it. And it's got a few charming tweaks along the way which help to support the background setting and maintain interest just that little bit longer. I'll give it a few more eps to get better before I likely grow bored and drop it. I'd say give it the old Four Episode Rule try.

50/50 on it myself, given a set of good anime to choose from. Sometimes the writers can pull something that offsets it just enough from the norm to keep me interested.
I think AoT pulled away from the baseline enough. I honestly hadn't thought of it that way til you mentioned it. Mostly because, even though I know that Eren is the MC, I had a hard time seeing it that way. But I see where you're coming from, yeah.
