The racers should just start all in a line and when the race starts only move them a little bit in comparison to that line.

If one slows down, move it a certain distance behind the line. If another speeds it up, move it a certain distance in front of the line. If they stay the same speed they stay where they are with respect to the line.

That way you can save on having to make a gigantic track or having them race around the enrire house (which would be fun, but ya know).
