I don't think it's random. Pretty classic mid-century aesthetic: working parts in gray, panels and human-touchable parts in color. The only misstep I see is the pulley wheels in the front; I would have kept those gray.

In places here it looks like the same mechanical part randomly changes colour along a rigid line

Yes, but we aren't talking about what I build are we? Last I checked this was a discussion about something someone else constructed and not you desperately trying to appear superior to me in any way you can because I disagree with you politically

I feel as though the weapon is a tad misshaped, also the whole thing feels more of a copy of the model rather than the concept artwork!
