GENERIC themes you want to see!
Okay, we've spent some time talking (complaining) about the lack of generic themes. Maybe we should be creative? What kinds of themes do we WANT to see?
For me, my top five would be:
1: Fantasy Castle. Loved the trolls, skeletons, and dwarves from the last line. Let's add to that! Kobolds, Lizardmen, Elves, or maybe even a Fantasy merfolk kingdom? Hey, we got Cyclopes! Hephaestus' Forge!
2: Generic non-fantasy castle. Give us more Factions! Dark Forest rocked, and I'd love to see the return of the Wolfpack! A series of "medieval life" sets for more townsfolk would be nice too. Generic shopfront, a tavern, a barracks, and a humble pig farmer!
3: Pirates. The last sets weren't BAD, but they lacked a theme other than generic pirates. Why not build something up around the battles between the British, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch navies?
4: Historical Samurai? Been a while since we got these, as I mentioned in the 'lack of themes' topic. We want warrior monks! Well, I do, at least.
5: The Ancient World. The Roman Empire, Egypt, Greece, Persia, Pontus, Carthage, and barbarian tribes from every walk of life! We could have a Roman Wayfort, various generic huts or structures themed for the different forces, and 'armybuilder' boxes for each faction! Boxes of three or four minifigs wouldn't be too bad. Heck, each Ancient Culture could have three or four different armybuilder boxes! Roman Legionnaires, Roman Onager, Roman Light Cavalry. Egyptian War Chariots! Greek Hoplites! Even special single-minifig packs for commanders and historical figures! ... although that last one could just be a minifig series expansion by itself... Oh, and if we get really bored, do a series of Charioteer sets based around the Byzantine Chariot Races! Four factions, a couple of Charioteers for each, fans, sections of Stadium, Hippodrome statues. Could even make a racing game out of it!

Something set around the Spanish Inquisition would be cool.

Paradisa but with a bigger emphasis on [aesthetic]
So more of this basically:
(and this to some extent):
but with louder colors and some semi-speedchamps grade not-testarossas and countaches. Basically just devote one half-year of city to vaporware. Heck, they can even put in the obligatory obnoxious helicopter set as long as it looks vaguely like the one from Magnum PI. Make the macaw from assembly square more widespread. Tool up a new flamingo piece. Put Chase McCain in a hawaii shirt. Sky's the limit.

Why hasn't there been a proper caveman theme yet? You know, hunting mammoths and sabertooth tigers, bashing each other with rocks and so forth.

Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
everything in this thread.
I might add:
Generic Space: Just two groups of spacemen with guns, maybe a rehash of Blacktron and a new group (BrickTron?), lasers, spaceships, bases, outlandish vehicles. Keep it simple though, no aliens, no goofy play functions, no ugly POOPs, basically just a return to the 90s.
Also:
Part packs: Lego has done this before with baseplates and currently the Nexo Shields, but we need just bags of cool parts to use, I.e.
Chainsaw Bag (heard this somewhere before): Nine chainsaws of various colors, including transparent ones.
Fire Bag: a dozen different fire pieces, in three colors!
Could work both for AFOLs (OH SHIT OTCs!) and kids (mommy buy me these cool chainsaws) alike.

Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
Is this a general thing that people in the wider lego community are agreeing on. A return to more classic themes over the stylised playthemes we currently have?
Anyway, I know it is not quite generic, but a return to EXO-FORCE (or a general mecha theme) would get me interested in playthemes again. Awesome mechs have display value in my mind. Of all the kits I have had, the EXO-FORCE kits are the only ones I wish I had of kept together. Having a return to the theme with modern parts and building techniques would be awesome. Even if it would be the perfect reason for me to moan about pricing.
Grand Titan cost me a tenner. A FRICKING TENNER. fuck inflation.

I pitched all of these ideas (from the generic huts to the army-builder boxes to the chariots etc) back in 2004. Through the magic of Lego design evolution all of those ideas got mashed up with this other blind-box thing we were doing and got turned into the Minifigures line. The Minifigures caveman and the ancient soldiers were all straight out of my 2004 pitches.Duerer wrote:Why hasn't there been a proper caveman theme yet? Good news for you then. I don't know how many people have figured out that Ninjago is EXO-FORCE II, but check out 70615 Great-Great-Grand-Titan.dilanski wrote:Is this a general thing that people in the wider lego community are agreeing on. The number of Mecha and vehicles had always made me question Ninjago's Ninja credentials, especially with the spinner and other gimmicks. Not sure I can call it EXO II, it's more its own beast.stubby wrote:I don't know how many people have figured out that Ninjago is EXO-FORCE II

Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
Not sure how generic it is but I feel like a mash up of city and sci-fi would be interesting. In a way The Lego Movie had elements of the cyberpunk police/ near-future urban dystopia secret agent genre. Perhaps the space police sets were an attempt to carve out a child-friendly lego zone on the Blade-Runner / Ghost in The Shell scene.
I don't buy much lego nowadays, but if I was a small child the main thing that would limit my fun with recent lego sets is the lack of properly scary bad guys. For my taste the space police theme needed more evil robots with swords for legs and fewer "villains" that looked like they were from the mos eisley cantina band. Maybe themes are limited by TLG's play-well "nobody gets shanked in Lego City" vibe, but to have interesting heroes in a theme you need bad guys worth fighting.
Like Vladtron, without him and his cronies the rainbow knights would have sucked.

Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
I'd argue that probably not, but there's a vocal segment to it, most of it seems like "this is what I grew up with hence the greatest."Is this a general thing that people in the wider lego community are agreeing on. A return to more classic themes over the stylised playthemes we currently have?
I don't think a dedicated mecha theme is "warranted" anymore - EF was a test to see if mecha are "in" with the kids, and considering they are, most action themes have at least one now. Heck, they even have a "mecha guy" with Mark Stafford, and Junya Suzuki is also a promising fresh talent (King's Mech).
That's a funny juxtaposition considering it's the decade that spawned BURPs, LURPs, and these beauties (coming from someone who grew up then and cherishes many things from the timeframe regardless).no ugly POOPs, basically just a return to the 90s

Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
I think it might be a slight reaction to a few years without any bread and butter Lego themes. No castle, space or pirate theme, just these funky crossovers. Now as I said in the other thread, Lego isn't marketing Ninjago or Nexo Knights at me, they have the ideas, creator and architecture lines for that. But I'd still love to see these generic themes to make some reappearance. Especially as I've gone off the licensed set premium.Zahru II wrote:I'd argue that probably not, but there's a vocal segment to it, most of it seems like "this is what I grew up with hence the greatest."Is this a general thing that people in the wider lego community are agreeing on. Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
Sengoku Jidai please! Ninjago is cool and it was even cooler when it came out 6 years ago when we hadn't seen Samurai stuff in almost a decade but now I really feel like it's ran its course! I wouldn't mind seeing Samurai stuff with more of a character emphasis but a generic Samurai theme would be so nice

Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
We've still got City. But apart from that I don't know if there's a market for bread and butter themes. Would kids in 2017 have any appetite for generic Castle and Space without any story attached? I don't think the market operates the way it used to.dilanski wrote:I think it might be a slight reaction to a few years without any bread and butter Lego themes. Yes because lego is ultimately about creating your own story:
"Tallyho lads, snuggle the houses and burn the women! Leave not a single potted plant alive! Full speed ahead and damn the cheesemongers"
