Do the kids know that? Look at all the comic books and magazines and cartoons TLG throws at the kids these days. Although to be fair, the Ninjago TV show used to be good.Captain-Camper wrote:Yes because lego is ultimately about creating your own story:

Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
See, I'm not sure what's the fundamental difference between "spacemen visit castle people" and "ninjas team up with batman or spider-man (or both)" when it comes to play.Yes because lego is ultimately about creating your own story
Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
I don't know that they do. When I was a kid the generics set were all we had and the were gold. Now when my kids play they act out the roles of the characters they know. Or they play in the framework of some videogame. Only since I got out my old MOC characters, and introduced them to some of my stories, have they started using more imagination. Brikwars helps too. lolTheVengefulOne wrote:Do the kids know that? Look at all the comic books and magazines and cartoons TLG throws at the kids these days. They generic sets probably wouldn't do as well, my boys never look twice at the City sets even when I point them out. It's like, "That monster truck is cool. BUT CLAY IS RUNNING OVER GHOST PIRATES WITH HIS MOTOCYCLE! LOOK ANOTHER BATMAN PUNCHING A GUY IN THE FACE! LETS GET THAT ONE!"stubby wrote:We've still got City. Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
It's really weird to see people complain that we're not getting enough generic stuff, and that we're getting too much cool and unique stuff.

ALL THE NEW LEGOS ARE DUMB I JUST WANT MORE OF WHAT THEY MADE WHEN I WAS A KID
Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
City sets are a special class. Kids don't get excited about generic stuff, but grandmas do. Grandmas don't want to buy the story-heavy stuff because they worry that they'll get the wrong thing, but city's genericity makes it the safe choice that they need. So the very thing that makes it less high-profile and appealing to kids is the thing that gives it a guaranteed market base.Maraxous wrote:They generic sets probably wouldn't do as well, my boys never look twice at the City sets even when I point them out. But you don't need more than one grandma line. Once you've got generic city there's no advantage to also having generic castle and generic space.

As far as themes I would like to see. How about some space sets that aren't Star Wars. Star Wars is great and all I still buy them, I just really like the other space themes too.

Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
I mean it is literally the same thing every single year! Police Officers, Fire men and Construction Workers and occasionally they'll do a one off series Coast Guard, Jungle Adventurers and Demilitarized Power Miners. Coming last time they made coast guard was 08 they seem to bring that back every 5-10 years. You can't fault them for doing another pseudo adventurers theme but it's frankly rather boring. Finally it's cool that this stuff might be a prelude to the power miners stuff and it's rather interesting but its suffers from the same style of build that irks me about recent lego.aoffan23 wrote:Also this might be the single dumbest post in this thread. Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
Well here's the past couple of years. Some repeats, but a pretty good variety overall I think.
- City 2011:
1st half year: Space, Police
2nd half year: Harbor
City 2012:
1st half year: Forest Police, Forest Firefighters, Utility Trucks
2nd half year: Mining
City 2013:
1st half year: Police, Firefighters
2nd half year: Coast Guard, Cargo Transport
City 2014:
1st half year: Police, Trucks
2nd half year: Arctic, Trains
City 2015:
1st half year: Swamp Police, Construction
2nd half year: Deep Sea Explorers, Space
City 2016:
1st half year: Firefighters, All-Terrain Racing, Prison Island
2nd half year: Airport, Volcano Explorers
City 2017:
1st half year: Police, Stunt Vehicles
2nd half year: Jungle Explorers, Coast Guard

Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
That is kind of the beauty of it.
The 98248973826th police car might just be the 98248973826th police car for you, but it is always going to be some kid's first. Since TLG thinks in the children of the now with their products, "tough shit kid, we've made 98248973826 police cars before, time to call quits on that" isn't really a reasonable attitude. As I see it, City's kind of the gateway theme for the kids before giving the zanier ones a try.

Re: GENERIC themes you want to see!
I honestly had to check the date the theme launched. Dear god, I had no idea the theme was that popular to stay around that long.Captain-Camper wrote:it was even cooler when it came out 6 years ago
Lego is on a roll when it comes to catering to its older audience. I think if there is market demand, Lego will be happy to supply, and if it ends up cannibalizing sales of play themes, then it'd just prove that kids like pirates and knights as much as mecha piloting ninjas and space knights. (As a side note, I wish Hasbro was half as good at doing the same with its NERF brand when it comes to the older audience there)stubby wrote:We've still got City. Isn't city also marketed towards younger kids in terms of build difficulty? Cars and buildings were what the Lego System was designed for, and when a kid reaches the age where they are old enough not to choke to death on System bricks, they might not be quite old enough to figure out how to put something together more complicated than a fire truck.stubby wrote:City sets are a special class. Maybe I am just out of touch. But I miss my old City fire truck, and police station and hospital. And the airport, that beautiful airport.
Gaze upon my airport ye 12 year olds and despair.
Anyway, my point can be summed up as "I'd take a swish castle or pirate ship to build right now, if Lego was selling one".

Stubby laid it out pretty well in his response, but I still want to point out that you listed 6 different sub-themes from the past two years and still opened with "it is literally the same thing every single year!"Captain-Camper wrote:I mean it is literally the same thing every single year!
