I think the design could be improved by making them more stable. You could use some of these:

This would help them look more like they're rolling across the deck, rather than nearly flying away.

This technique is very good.

The only thing that might be a problem is that the friction might be too great for the cannon to move backwards properly.

That can be solved very easily. All you have to do is make sure the spring brick pushes directly against the sliding section, thus eliminating any tilting.
