Colette's Attempts at Photo-Editing

Postby Colette » Wed Mar 05, 2014 3:45 am

I had to download GIMP for AI class, which turned out to be a pretty powerful tool, thus rendering the pirating of photoshop unnecessary.

Here's my first little whack at editing photos with GIMP (links to full size):
Image
I decided my Chief Scientist deserved a fancy desk and office, so I built a hover-desk which is actually a giant touchscreen/hologram projector. The office has a fully glass floor and large window panels (in fact, every piece aside from the minifig is trans-clear).

You can do everything in GIMP that you can in Photoshop.  The only difference is that GIMP doesn't always have the built in shortcuts that Photoshop offers.

Skew the displays to match the surfaces on which they rest.  You have only partially skewed them.

Skew them some more like Natalya said, and then increase their transparency by a touch as well.

If you can, see if you can get static lines over them, like the pixel lines from old televisions - the best looking holograms look (in my opinion, feel free to ignore me) like someone took the output from a first generation television, and put it in 3d with washed out colours.

Screw star trek holodecks. Screw them to Hades.

The shopping is pretty great, but should be more transparent.

On a side note, the building doesn't look that great, I know it's kind of the point, but you should tone down the use of trans.

Good job, Colette, for a first go.  Especially in GIMP.
As the others say, try skewing the graphics and the text like in that example I made.  Toward the center, skew both sides along the same vector as the table edges.  To one side or the other, skew both sides to the same vector as that table edge.  The skewing will alter the size of your text somewhat, so resize it some afterward.  Pull it in a little from the stroke around the boxes.  With that much text, I'd agree that you should drop the transparency.  Perhaps about 20%.  The 3d graphic in the corner is a nice damn touch, man.

I skewed the graphics a little more, and ultimately decided against dropping the transparency.

The centre one looks fine, but the two on the side need to be skewed even more. They should be narrower at the far end, like you've done with the centre panel.

I actually agree with this. You could color it up with Gimp or paint. Paint as in the stuff you put on warhammer miniatures or walls.

While, I'll never make it on the cover of the Time Magazine, it's at least good to see, that one of my characters did.

Nice to see you're taking a go at the mag covers. They're looking good but you might be saving them in the wrong format or size since there seems to be a drop of quality  in some small details like the red border.

But that's just me being picky.

Now that you brought it up, I looked closer.
He made it a png. So I looked even closer.

That red border was made slightly transparent for some reason, so you can see the photo extending under it.
But it does look like there is some artifacting due to the shrinking done on this forum or the final image served from imgur.

I suppose if he saved the png at the size he wanted it displayed at here it would be ok.
Looking even closer, the full size png looks to have artifacts in the upper left inside red corner.

I wonder if at some point he had saved to jpg, before making the final png.

I believe the term you're looking for is meteoric, not astronomical.
