Dwarf Fortress Discussion

This is in no way related to the long dead dwarf fortress succession game. This is about sharing your psychotic tales from the land of slightly shorter Warheads. I believe something interesting that occurred was when I tried to build a pyramid fortress. It ended up looking like an underground remains of ZZD. At least three people got trapped by accidentally channeling all around them. There were no survivors.

One of my favorite fortresses had a labyrinth filled with traps. Traps included things as simple as weapon traps, to the dreaded "room with a bear".

A baby in my current fortress was stolen by a goblin snatcher who killed his mom in the process. The baby is still present in my unit list, and his thoughts say:

"Urist McBaby has been quite content lately. He is happy to be free."

Interpret this as you wish.

I just noticed a fun thing: Crossbows are the best weapon in the game. Dwarves can't be equipped with crossbows. Goblins equip their entire armies with crossbows.

I equip crossbows all the time. It's just regular bows that were disallowed. I'm not sure if they got re-allowed in the "exotic weapons" fix.

My dwarves refused to train or pick up bolts when I gave them crossbows. But that was a couple versions ago, I should try again.

Anyways, the goblins turned my whole army into Swiss cheese except one guy who slept through the whole battle. I've drafted some of my hauldwarves and built anti-crossbow walls outside my entrance.

You have to specifically make wooden training bolts for them to use if you want them to practice. You also have to build targets to shoot at, and designate them to be used in active training.

I played this game for a day (particularly adventure mode) but simply couldn't interpret the Text-graphics into something playable.

It takes a bit. As an example-

You can go to the Dwarf Wiki and download some tilesets if you are so inclined. I would recommend playing Fortress mode before you ditch it though.

Anyways...

My latest adventurer went on a campaign against the Elven/Goblin alliance, and killed something like 300 enemies on her way up the coast.

Once I finally decided that she was good enough to retire- legendary hammerer, armor, shield, and fighting, I started her back home.

Was ambushed by a bear halfway there and thrown into a murky pool, where she subsequently drowned.

Always train your swimming skill, kids! :D

Wait, seriously? I always spend one point in swimming so that I can't die.

Yeah, I usually don't bother, being that I don't usually play Adventure. I'll be 1-pointing Swimming from now on though, believe me...

of course I gave mandatory swimming lesson to my dwarfs in the form of a lever that could flood my fortress, and then another to drain it.
Act first, then think, then try to find a way to cover up the horrible mess you made.
