An RPG Case Study

Post by Olothontor » Mon Aug 16, 2010 5:50 pm

I've been working, messing around with contrast, and attempting to hone my spriting skills. I recently started a case study of the old PSX/PS2 game Alundra, and my very first attempt after my research was a simple RPG-style jelly.

From left to right: Basic movement, basic attack, death, and idle.

I'll be posting any further work on this thread.

UPDATE: Fixed the death animation up a bit, added an idle animation (yeah, it's supposed to look kinda like it's breathing), and posted the spritesheet so far for an easier analysis of the parts for those interested in seeing.

Thanks ::thumbs up::

Minor update: added a knockback animation, complete with sloshing back forward.

Now now, be patient. I'm getting there. I'll finish up the case study of the cute little Jelly and then move onto something... else. Not sure precisely what yet. Probably a Troll or somesuch.

Nice looking ooze you got there!
Are you planning on making some animated RPG or just studying fantastic creature pixelization? Either way, good so far!

One question though, you animated that gelly by making a GIF right?

I like it. Simple, but nicely done.

Actually, both. The study is in turn for a game I'm working on with a few gentlemen in England/Finland.

That is indeed a gif. File.

Also, thanks for the kind words, naussica.

Looking excellent, Oloth. The animation is great. Idle looks slightly strange though...

Strange in what way? I'd like to fix it (keep in mind it is supposed to look like it's "breathing", though).

I'm not sure. It seems to be moving far too fast to be at rest. I would compare the movement to be more of a "firing projectile" stance, to be honest.

Alright, well, while I figure that out....

It's

a

TROLL!

Image

A large fissure of a mouth where a head and neck should be, and tentacles for feeding things into said maw. To make up for the lack of eyesight, it "sees" much in the same way a bat does; through echolocation.

I wanted to make a unique troll, not just your standard stuff. Enjoy, more is on the way.

Yup, I agree. It does look a bit too pulsating-ey

Alrighty, I'll see if I can add a few frames here and there.

Playing with the featureless feet, because they bothered me.
