So I just finished my first assignment for my summer typography class, which was to make a face out of type. It was fun.

Left pupil is a shit-ton of overlayed, fairly transparent Cs, bracket on the bridge of the nose, shadow on right cheek is composed of 3 semi-transparent, semi-deformed lower-case Rs, Curly braces and parenthesis are lips, the nose is built out of a question mark, a G, a 9, a W, an h, an i, and a 5, right eye is a bunch of 2s, Cs, and ampersands, etc.*CRAZYHORSE* wrote:This looks great but how was this typed?
I don't see any characters in/on his face.
It was made in Adobe Illustrator, which I'm not too good at as it stands, but I'm getting better.
Thank you for the kind words.
[edit]
I almost forgot! His right cheek is a j. Pretty much all other lines in his face/ hair are parenthesis, which I feel like is somewhat cheap, but it was taking me long enough as it is.

Maybe later. While I have access to all the other students' files, they are all in *.ai format, and I'd have to download them individually, open them in illustrator, convert them to jpeg, upload them to a site (which I doubt I have the legal right to do anyway without their permission), and we all know I'm more lazy than that.enders_shadow wrote:jw, can you post some of the other pictures from your class? I'd love to see more attempts.
Honestly, most of them were extremely simple and unimpressive, but the assignment was basically to gauge where were are right now at the beginning of this class (it's a summer class), and we could put as much or as little effort into it really. There were a handful of others though that really stood out, and probably at least two or three that far exceeded my own work in terms of attention to detail and awesomeness.
[edit] I looked up some examples online, just to give you an idea, even if they aren't from my class.
About 85% were along these lines:
<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_N6aBl53h6g/T ... aphiic.jpg" width="400">
<img src="http://www.raveninteractive.net/images/type_face.png" width="400">
<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2484/364 ... e07dc0.jpg">
<img src="http://dornyika.com/images/posts/typo/portrait10.png">
some were much more simple even than those.
Around 5 or 6 people's were more along these lines:
<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vAwja0nByH0/T ... l+type.jpg">
<img src="http://imgs.abduzeedo.com/files/article ... alsk8r.jpg">
<img src="http://cdnimg.visualizeus.com/thumbs/4c ... 9381_h.jpg">
you get the idea....
note: I don't necessarily think "simple" = "bad" in many of these cases.

Thanks so much. And thanks everyone else who likes it too. It's always nice to hear good things about something you spent time on.enders_shadow wrote:yours is one of my top favorites, out of the ones you just posted. it has that perfect blend of simplicity/cartoonish that goes great with han solo, and a touch of realism where you can see harrison ford. much better than most of the others.
I feel like I definitely overused parenthesis though, and I could have made it even better if I had spent more than one day on it. I may try to refine it further if I have time, but I'm still pretty happy with it as-is.
