Yes, well... I honestly favor 3.5 over 4E.... 4E, if you're paying attention, actually DISCOURAGES actual roleplaying. It focuses on the battle and puzzle aspect, and much, much less on the story. Also, while some of the new rules are kinda cool, they make D&D seem a lot more like this pen-and-paper MMORPG. I mean come on. Take a five minute rest and you get to spend as many healing surges as you want? That seems to me a lot like having your video game character sit down and stare at the health bar until it's relatively full again before venturing out after a battle. It's just not terribly realistic anymore, and i don't terribly appreciate that much.
I will admit, it is much simpler to learn. I have a girl at my school (who has dubbed me the "Go-To Guy" for RPGs [whoot! I'm gaining a rep!]) who wants to learn, and I figure 4E is the way to go, and then let her make the decision between 4E and 3.5 on her own. I just think they over simplified it, to the point that's almost unbearable to all of us 3.5 players. It's a completely different game.
Now, mind you, I'm not saying it's not fun at all! It is, terribly fun (otherwise I wouldn't have joined this game), I just don't think this follows D&D's normal traditions.

which, in all honesty, is what DnD is primarially about. 3.5 got a bit too pretentious and snobby about roleplaying, to the point where you'd be rolling more d20s in non-combat encounters than in combat! 4th edition goes back to the roots of DnD: you kill monsters, and take their stuff. at the core level, that's what DnD's about.Olothontor wrote:It focuses on the battle and puzzle aspect, and much, much less on the story.
as for the healing surge thing, think about it. it takes one standard action to use a second wind, which is six seconds. a short rest is supposed to be five minutes. there are probably more six second intervals than a character has healing surges, so you totally have the time to be regaining healing surges.
and think about it. you're hanging out with your friends, adventuring like a good adventurer should, and then suddenly orcus pops out and fights you. you eventually win, but combat is still tiring. to get enough energy to keep moving forward would take at LEAST five minutes. also, "health" is by all definitions something invented by the game world as a crutch to lean upon for showing human vitality. having hit points is not how human bodies work, and by naturally recovering them after a long battle, it's simulating the fact that people who just got in a big fight can become alert and rested up again for the next encounter. if you're thinking about hit points, think of them like a clock, seeing how far away someone is from passing out from exhaustion before taking a rest.

I consider myself a 3.5 person, and a 4E person. Weird, I know. I consider 3.5 to be DnD the Novel, and 4E to be DnD the Action Movie. Both good, and for different reasons. Both bad, and for different reasons. ALso, consider that 4E just puts the crunchy bits where its needed (combat and action) and leaves the roleplaying very rules-light for us (good and bad ).
Anyways, we have 5 people. But don't take that as a "door's closed"... anyone still interested and able to post a few times a week is still welcome, in case we get 6-10 total we'd do two groups.
In regards to races, the core races are accepted automatically. Ask if you want to be a Monster Manual race and we'll see (I haven't had the time to review those yet... it'll probably be a yes, I just want to make sure and see if we can write it in decently.)
As for downloading illegal copies of published books: I do not condone this. If you must, please do not parade that around.
I think that's that.

It's a secret to everybody.
I haven't played any 4th edition yet, but I haven't been too excited by what I've read on it. This wouldn't be a bad way to cut my teeth on it...
However, the other site is blocked up here at work... so that puts me out, unfortunately. You guys have fun, and perhaps you can throw some of the cool stuff that goes down up here?

Ach, that's a bummer.
Tell you what though, if we get a few more interested, we can do a thread here for those that cannot get to RPoL (or simply don't wanna sign up on another site, which is fair). Rolling would boil down to being honest, but I trust you guys (mostly).
Be less fancy than RPoL, but it could still work.
EDIT: Or if someone else wants to run a thread here. I'm easy, either way suits me fine.

No no no, that is not that. This is that, that is to say, that which is that cannot be this, but since that's that, and this is that. Therefore, this and that are in a state between themselves, and that which is that is not this. So this is that, and that is this.feuer_faust wrote:I consider myself a 3.5 person, and a 4E person. I think those stats only apply to non-Mexicans.

if we're talking adventures in the DnD world, just last session in my IRL campaign took us into the feywild. we groaned at giant mushrooms, moaned at caves that shifted their geometry, and fussed about settling a dispute between the Eladrin and the Satyrs. oh, and we "accidentally" tricked a powerful lightning elemental into summoning a devil that twisted and corrupted him into taking over the entire plane. whoops! at least we stole some powerful amulets that let us travel to different planes!

I play quite a bit of what we call "freeform" roleplaying online. There isn't much dice rolling involved and when there is, the GM usually handles it "behind the screen". While this isn't the same feeling as the tabletop version that I have grown to know and love... it's still definitely fun in its own right.

4th editon is d a p p e r... honestly if you are in it for battles just play wargames. the main reason its on paper is so you are immagineing everything thus can put as mutch or as little depth as nescisary. and honestly the only time that DnD rules are hard is if you are the DM controlleing a whole bunch of different species of charecters at once.
