Since the dawn of time, one genre of music has dominated and ruled with an iron fist

FASTER than anything we could say. It is often used as this.

The least used emoticon. Now used for this situation.

My new badass story.
Yesterday I did some programming. I had a broken shader.
It was working in the old Unity version but was broken in the new version.
I thought it was a problem with Unity, but it wasnt.

Seems that the code I had gotten from another user was broken, but the old Unity ignored that, it used the code anyway. Then they fixed their code to be more strict, and correct, so it was now broken.

It took me a full 2 hours to find the problem.

Code: Select all
Shader "DAB/SkySphere"
{
   Properties
   {
      _Color ("Main Color", Color) = (1,1,1,1)
      _MainTex ("Base (RGB)", 2D) = "white" {}
   }

   SubShader
   {
      Tags {"Queue" = "Background"}

      Pass
      {
         // TAGS WAS HERE AND BROKEN

        Cull Front
        ZWrite Off

          Fog { Mode Off }

        SetTexture [_MainTex]
        {
            ConstantColor [_Color]
            combine texture*constant
        }
      }
   }
}

I moved the Tags line up a couple lines and it worked.

Yeah that took 2 hours. I was very happy after I finally saw it working again.

Then I had icecream.

What exactly are you working on with Unity, anyway?

Also, is that javascript? I know it's not C#, but I'm not familiar with the syntax of javascript.

I see you joined this year so never saw this stuff.
Very, very slowly making minimal progress.

I should make a new web player, all that funky stud behavior is fixed and you can place stumps now.

----------

That code is a custom shader language that Unity uses.
Its made to be easier to use.

It then gets compiled into much more complicated code that a proper shader uses. That part happens automagically in the engine.

It's not Java, Java object names aren't capitialized. for example, if you wanted to instantiate an object, you would type something like:

public String myString = "This is my string";

I know it's not Java. That's what we use at my school in all the programming classes.

package i_rock
/*case doesn't actually matter in java, except for reserved keywords like, class,
*int, boolean, public, private, and so on like Bonn-o-Tron. Other than that, it's simply important
*to be consistent with what has been set. Packages can actually contain
*capital letters, but it's just a standard that people don't. The same thing
*applies to classes, objects, and so on like Bonn-o-Tron.
*/
public class Prove_Mgb519_Right{

public void main(String[]args)
{
String str1, str2;
str1 = "Javascript";
str2 = "Java";

if((str1.equals(str2))!==true)
System.out.print("mgb519 wasn't talking about Java, which is not one of the three languages available in Unity.");

else
System.out.print("mgb519 was talking about Java, and was completely wrong.");
}
}//when I run this program, what will print to the console? Do tell...

Nope, I've seen that used at least 10 times. This sounds familiar has only been used twice or three times.

For the record, I also thought they were the same thing at first. But for future reference, pay attention to the little details like this-it's the same level of difference that can change a program: a misplaced capital letter can be the difference between a program and a runtime error.
