The Dig (HH)

This is my entry to Halloween Hellhunt; the battle is going to be narrated by the viewpoint of the greatest dwarf explorer, Cogni Copperflux himself, so sit back and enjoy! (I'm not going to indicate turns, I hope you'll manage to find out who's turn is when just by following the story). All units can be found in the encyclopedia, except for a new one, whose stats will be given at the end.

Image

Hello! I'm Cogni Copperflux, and if you're reading this, then my message carrier rat has returned to the Engineer's Guild (or caught by enemy lines), and I'm probably lost. Or dead. Nevertheless, here's my report of the expedition to the Fallen Kingdom of Nekehara. If you might not be a scholar from the Guild, then I'll let you know that Nekehara was an ancient kingdom, loacted the westernmost part of Northeros; currently deep behind orkish territory.

Image

Because of this, the expedition was thightly funded, and two out of our three boats and crew was slain by maraduers; nevertheless, we made it to a ruin! We landed here and proceeded to explore!

Image

There were many interesting relics of old times inside, but what got my attention in an instant was the marvelous azure crystal on a pedestal. It glimmered and hummed brilliantly on the pedestal.

Image

Naturally, I grabbed it and tried to show it to my entourage, but they were all looking at the opposite direction for some reason.

Image

To the far end of the ruin, a mysterious black gate - a portal? - has appeared, and a ragged fellow came through it. 'The seal has been broken! Who dares to awaken us? The time is not right! You shall perish, fools!' He sounded really cranky. Then he disappeared.

Image

After his departure, some weird dark miasma started to pour out of the portal...

Image

... from which a bunch of ebon skeletons jumped out, wielding deadly blades!

Image

To make matters worse, my lads have heard the sound of rattling bones outside, and to their horror, even more skeletons emerged from the sand! I was sure we couldn't get out of this without a fight.

Image

We took defensive positions inside, and I've blasted one of the skeletons down.

Image

My kinsmen attacked the outsiders.

Image

Sadly, one of them was killed mercilessly by the dead.

Image

The black bones rushed at the guards, but met their demise by imperial steel.

Image

We dashed outside, slowly whittling down the outside opposition. Thank the runes we brought a cleric! He revived our recently fallen comrade.

Image

Yet we did not know that these dead... don't remain dead for long.

Image

They caught two of us by surprise and they were gutted mercilessly.

Image

Trying to defend from all sides we did our best, but panic dulled our senses and we failed to do anything.

Image

Although I shot one black skeleton down, another pulled itself together and they followed us.

Image

Outside, we lost another men.

Image

I hopped in the boat and desperately pulled out some explosives. Not the most professional digging device, but it did come darn handy.

Image

It wiped out everyone outside; sadly one of my fellow dwarves too.

Image

My last men ran to embark the boat so we could leave this blasted deathtrap...

Image

... but those blasted wretches got him!

Image

They gutted him right before my eyes.

Image

Left alone, I grabbed the paddles and started rowing like mad... those crazy monsters tried to jump in the boat but luckily they didn't... I've barely survived this one! Now as I'm writing, I'm low on supplies, and there's the constant threat of being discovered by ork scouting parties. So if you read this: SEND SOME HELP!

PS: At least I managed to keep that marvelous crystal. It doesn't resonate... it literally sings to me.

Gameplay: Interesting mechanic with the ebony skeletons. Though it seems this was staged more than played. 3.
Photography: Photography as always is great. It is crisp and clear and without error. 5.
Violence: Violence was small, but good enough. 3.5
Writing: Writing is what you are best at Zahru. 5.
Overall Appeal: A great and unique battle. Just like the rest of your battles.

Overall Score: 4.5

"The Dig" seemed a lot more of a story than an actual game. Let's get to reviewing.

Gameplay: As I said, it looked like the match was set for a story, so it looked a bit staged. The skeletons were a cool addition game-play-wise, though. 2
Photography: The pictures are flawless and exceptionally well-done. 5
Violence: There was an average amount of violence. Decent for the amount of combatants. 3
Writing: Exceptional; currently the best writing out of the Hellhunt reports! I really like story-based ones, and it's original. 5
Overall Appeal: This report seemed more of a story than a match, but I want to see more of our dwarf friend! Good job!

Overall Score: 4/5 (Average of all scores, rounded)

Actually I was a bit dissappointed as I awaited a much larger "labyrinth". It was still interesting, mostly because of the great story!

Well, you can only get so far with that amount of men :) Next time remind them to bring a pyromancer, nothing gets those undead bastards half as well as being incinerated

Photography: this was good, but no extream shots or anything. 4

Violence: average. 3

And with a score of 12, it appears we may have to pull out the tiebreakers. Hmm.

Good battle, Zahru. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback guys! My main inspiration for the black skellies were slasher villains (just to be in the spirit of halloween); as they tend to come back even though the heroes have dealt with them. As for it being staged; I can see what you guys mean, but trust me, I play out the games and adjust the story according to the chain of events. Anyhow, what's done is done, we'll see how good this would prove in comparison to other's games.
