2001 vs 2005
I'm looking to get my friends into the veritable barrel of lunacy that is Brikwars, and I'm not sure if I should baptize them through the 2001 or 2005 rules.
Currently, I'm leaning towards 2001, as we've played a variety of tabletop games (model-based warfare, board, and otherwise) including Warhammer 40k, which my friends had a particular penchant for. I have no lack of faith in their prowess for making sense of convoluted rules, stats, variables and all other manners of mind-numbing nonsense that come with table-based fun.
The further I explain, the more obvious it seems that the answer to my inquiry is 2001, however I'm unfamiliar with the 2001 rules, so I don't know how they compare, especially for the uninitiated.

Go for 2005 and make up everything you don't see in there on the spot.

You should start with the rules you are most familiar with.

Or learn 2010

Fill the gaps with 2005 rules and it's playable!

I like 2005 most, but use some of the weapons stats from 2010 and a lot of supplements from 2001.

Speaking from personal experience, 7-12 year olds can understand 2005 rules fairly quicky allowing us to get to the battle faster. Your friends have played wargames before, so I would think 2005 would seem even simpler and easier to use quickly for them.

I really hope Bonn-o-Tron's friends are not 7-12 years old.
Often, literally, a pillow fight but may include similar situations like volleyball, particularly when wardrobe is skimpy and the action is bouncy.
