Re: Beside a Dying Fire
And here I thought this was a reference to The Road.
Though I've never seen The Walking Dead, I would not be surprised to hear that this character duo is based off of the nameless father and son from The Road, especially if they talk about "carrying the fire" and whatnot. Do they say "okay" to one another fucking constantly? Does the kid remember pre-apocalyptic society?

Beside a Dying Fire in the name of the season two finale, and references the fact that the lest remnants of the old world(democracy, some semblance of safety) are truly gone now.IVhorseman wrote:And here I thought this was a reference to The Road.

The comics came out before The Road, so i don't think so. There are a few other survivors in their group, so they talk alot. The dad has, as of the most recent episodes, given up "carrying the fire". The loudest voice for morals and humanity (in the show at least) recently died. the kid hates staying in the house.

Man, that book was both interesting and annoying to read at the same time. I didn't like the ending, though, but I see what the author was going for.IVhorseman wrote:And here I thought this was a reference to The Road.

Re: Beside a Dying Fire
The main difference between Rick and the Father from The Road is that Rick is optimistic to his son, and will do anything to keep him. Rick is in a world where there are still farms, food and hope. The Father from The Road is honest about how fucked they are, and only wants what is best for his son. If that means suicide, so be it.IVhorseman wrote:And here I thought this was a reference to The Road.

The kids are also diffent. Carl is talkative, smart, independent with a sense of justice. The Son is weak, dependent on others, and kind.

Re: Beside a Dying Fire
Awesome scene Silent, I 've read the comics and follow the show, FYI during that scene it was so cold outside that you could see the zombies breath, they had to digitally remove it. If you guys have a chance and a several hours, go to your local borders and read the comic books, they seem to be going a little different way in the show, so it's still fun to watch if you already know the story in the comics. Debating about reading the road, the moive was just depressing to watch.

rick would have a revolver, although i think he was using Shane's pistol during the barn scene. I'm not sure.morganm wrote:Love that series; half way through season 2 now.

Re: Beside a Dying Fire
The book's about as depressing. It gets hard to tell when the father's speaking and when the son's speaking... the lines get muddled up on purpose.

Re: Beside a Dying Fire
Yeah, there are no quotation marks, so the only thing designating the dialogue from the rest of the text is a new line. It's written completely in short sentences without punctuation (except for periods). It really gets across the bleak, gloomy feel of the story.

Honestly, I can't say, because I haven't read the book. But screwing around with punctuation like that will result in one of two things. Either you are a really, really, really good writer and it's epic, or you are in the pretty good and below category and your book is just crap. I've read both.
Also, glad to see I'm not the only one who has used orc heads for zombies
This should be in the Rulebook somewhere:
