I've been playing the same game of Civ II for 10 years. Though long outdated, I grew fascinated with this particular game because by the time Civ III was released, I was already well into the distant future. I then thought that it might be interesting to see just how far into the future I could get and see what the ramifications would be. Naturally I play other games and have a life, but I often return to this game when I'm not doing anything and carry on. The results are as follows.
- The world is a hellish nightmare of suffering and devastation.
- There are 3 remaining super nations in the year 3991 A.D, each competing for the scant resources left on the planet after dozens of nuclear wars have rendered vast swaths of the world uninhabitable wastelands.
I simply cannot believe this. You have to read it. There's suddenly a community eight thousand plus strong that's sprung up around this. It's like Orwell's 1984 rendered for us to play with. I don't have Civilization II, though- he's promised to upload the savefile, and I sure as hell want to mess with this game.
I mean.
Wow.

That's intense. I do have Civilization II, so I might check it out.

I have Civ 2 laying around somewhere too. I'm pretty sure it doesn't work with Windows 7 though. I would always play until I got bored, then turn on cheat mode and kill everyone.

I actually avoid that site. It's a matter of the internet's construction, Silva. I get linked to interesting things.

Wow. I actually got Civ2 running on Windows 7 last night and played it all the way through with no cheats. I'm really impressed with how well this game has held up over the years. I played for like 4 hours straight and had a blast. I can provide a link if anyone else is looking to run the old game on Windows 7 too.

It's incredible the stories and alternate history you can come up with games like Civ. Rise of Nations and Empire Earth, although not turn-based, give you that feel too.

OK, here is the link to the post on the CivFanatics forum that has the instructions that I followed:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost. ... stcount=87
and here is the link to the post on the same forum with the patching program mentioned in the first link:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=193215
These links are useful if you have the original game disk, but might still be useful if you have the Gold Edition too.

In a game of Civ IV my friend and I played years ago, a lone machine gunner held out for multiple turns against a Malian(Or was it Indian?) horde. He gained so many promotions but was finally defeated because our civ was too shitty to send reinforcements.

I just broke out my Civ II Test of Time disk. I wish I could find my Alpha Centauri game... that game was so much fun.

There's a brilliant Alpha Centauri LP on the LPArchive.
