A tank? No, dude, this thing's got to be stationary, maybe as an emplacement defense in cities & locations of strategic importance against nukes & aircraft, hooked into the city grids.

MARS- doable with 1970s technology, $20B, solves thousands of the world's problems, nobody fucking bothers.

I'd say you could do it with a tank, albeit a large one, with maybe 2 crewmen and everything else automated, and then some serious power supplies/generators.

How do you fit a nuculear power plant on a tank? :mystery:

If you actually read the thing, you would have noticed that it's only using power for a fraction of a second. A Watt is joules per second.

Okay lets assume it draws from the grid for X time, fills batteries, and than uses them to fire, its still a ton of power.

Do any of you guys have stats on the wattage by cubic centimeter a lithium-ion battery stores?

They better name this thing ZEUS.

Ok, let's do some math, here.
The article wrote:50 billion watts

The article wrote:the pulse only lasts for two-trillionths of a second

5E10/2E12
That's .025 joules.

What the hell is .025 joules. I know what family joules are, I've even got some.

http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?ad ... bearfences

Fence chargers should deliver between 5,000 and 7,000 volts. While the exact amount of power needed to deter bears has not been scientifically determined, it is the best estimate of wildlife professionals that these numbers are sufficient.

Joule ratings between .025 and 0.70 have proven effective for deterring bears. Electrical engineers determine power amounts in a measurement known as joules. Different energizers produce different joule ratings. It is suggested that when purchasing an energizer for a portable fence that it have a joule rating of between .025 and 0.70.

Power Sources for Permanent Electric Fences

It is easiest if you can plug into an outlet that connects to a village, town or suburban power supply. Chargers may be plugged into 110 volt AC (household) current.
Away from power supplies, 12 or 6-volt DC batteries are an excellent choice. These "wet cell" batteries can be charged with boat and car engines, portable generators, or solar panels.

Woah, woah, woah - back up a snot here . . . I know I posted the thread to begin with but I thought these things needed a hellalot moar power than that.

Because if that is right - you could power the initial "laser" off this fukker off a car battery, and the huge damage is from the electrons it "rips" off of nearby particles.

Surely I MUST be wrong here . . .

I really have no idea.

I just tried to give an idea what .025 joules are.

Nothing is wrong here. However, that's not quite how it works. Because it's not just the power, it's how quickly you can access it. So this system would probably contain copious amounts of silver or other stuff along with some really high capacity...capacitors, or something. I don't feel like doing more math, but it's a big deal because of the impossibly short time frame in which you are accessing that energy, rather than the amount of energy.

Yes,but you also need tons of energy, you need 50B watts, you only need it for a fraction of a second but the current has to be a whole 50B watts, you can't power a computer with a Lemon battery regardless of how long you wait.

No, you don't need tons of energy. You need energy really fast. That's what I'm saying. Watts are not a measure of energy, but a measure of energy per second. The reason you can't power a computer with a lemon battery, on the other hand, is a matter of amps. STOP MAKING ME TRY TO REMEMBER AP PHYSICS, DAMMIT.

Derp.

I withdraw all attempts at physics until I gather the patience to pirate & read some textbooks.

Expect :necro: in a week or two.
