Can anybody identify this piece?

I got this in a bin of random parts on eBay, and I have yet to figure out what it is or what it's from.

Looks like a projectile from one of the later bionicle sets, the underwater ones.

Looks like Lego's failed attempt to get into the hardware business. Their nails just couldn't hold up to the competition.

Not likely. I have a bunch of those lying around, and it's not the same shape, size, or color.

It may be one of those pegs that keep the Railroad tracks together when you buy them.
Not sure why it's red though. :mystery:

Yup, it's the axle. I had one that was sorta broken and had come loose. You can see everything here:
