Portal IS amazing though, Lovely humour, keeps a consistent tone, Tells so much from the environment from Ratt Man's dens and scribblings to the slow change of GLaDOS as you get further in, nice compact puzzles and unique mechanics.

KERBAL SPACE PROGRAM. Just plan great sandboxey rocket building game all packaged up in a lovely aesthetic with great visuals. Nicely balanced parts and allows you to build the most bat-shit insane rockets ever.

My votes for top games: Original XCOM. Original Deus Ex. Civ IV: Beyond the Sword. Starflight I. Nethack. Ultima VI.

I agree with much of this, except I cannot comment on Starflight or Ultima VI- these games existed long before I did.

I would also add Alpha Protocol, Mega Man X, and probably replace Nethack with SLASH'EM. I feel like the Halo trilogy also deserves to be up there somewhere, as the successor to Quake. Warcraft III is pretty prominent in the gaming pantheons as well, although I would refrain from putting World of Warcraft up there - the trouble with MMOs is that they are changing beasts and they tend to have a peak of excellence, somewhere approximately 2/3 through their lifetimes.
