Colony Wars! Updated with more pictures!

Post by halo 3000 » Sat Jan 18, 2014 1:45 pm

I've always enjoyed the idea of playing my favorite RTS games on the table top. A few months ago QuantumSurfer and I brainstormed Ideas for a Microscale RTS style game.

Image

These will be the standard tank unit in the game. I went for simplicity in design for mass production purposes. As you can see, it's just a 1x2 plate and a minifig hand

Image

These are supposed to be easily identifiable.

Image

I have 50 tanks for each team right now.

Image

A little blurry, but you can see the colors.

Image

Next are APCs. Infantry plays a big part in the game because they are the only way to capture resource buildings. Infantry is represented by the stud on the back.

Image

The other team. APCs are also supposed to be a fast hit and run style unit. several upgrades will allow them to take on tanks and artillery effectively.

Image

Artillery. These were somewhat hard of a design to come up with, but I am extremely happy with the way they turned out.

Image

In my test game last night with a friend, artillery played a big role, they are almost overpowered in the way I have them now.

Image

Last is a resource station. Several of these will be placed around the battlefield. See the two orange studs? That means two infantry squads occupy it. The only way to capture it is to have your infantry squads go in and clear it out. this will be done with a Risk style game mechanic. roll the dice, and if its a tie, the defender wins

Image

My game will be built to this scale. I think I will call it Colony Wars. Coming soon to a Bonus Material forum near you.

Cool. Nice mini tanks. Best non-brikwars lego game i've seen in a while.

I must admit I much prefer the structures over the vehicles, but I can understand that at this small scale it's hard to pull off anything flashy. Regardless you've managed to make those fairly easy to identify so that's neat (personally I like the artillery pieces best despite looking a bit fragile)!

Actually they are pretty sturdy! Make one and see for yourself.

But yea, only so much I can do at that scale. I try to make the buildings look as cool as possible though.

Air units are hard to do because you would need a base for them. I'm trying to design the game to be simplistic enough so that everyone will have the parts to play. I would love to do Navel units, but that would come a lot later. I can't imagine a way to build a decent looking mech to this scale. It would also be hard.

I like a variety in units as much as the next guy, but right now i'm just gonna keep it at 3 different units.

I'm a tad disappointed that this otherwise good thread is constantly getting derailed by shitguy. How about we just don't aknowledge him and treat his posts as noise here? I mean, I'll probably just delete it anyways.

I look forward to seeing this written up, Halo. I'd thought you lost interest. I'm interested to see what ideas from our brainstorming session made it through playtesting. I love what you've done with the vehicles. They're clean, simple, and easily recognizable. The pieces are common enough that you could build an army with a couple of bucks on bricklink, which is a huge positive in my opinion. I had no doubt you could pull it off, though. I thought your microscale colonies were pretty brilliant the first time I saw them.

This is an awesome idea, I can't wait to be seeing more of this. The resource station is probably one of my favorites.

Since you guys seem to like this stuff, I'll post some pictures from a test game the other night.

Image

Overwatch of the battlefield. I just put a big towel under a white sheet to create a sort of hilly snow landscape. worked out well since I had an abundance of white plates and bricks.

Image

Resource station at the center of the battlefield. easily identifiable as the most valuable resource point due to the rare chrome rock raiders Crystal. Try to guess what set its from. Hint, nothing in the last 5 years.

Image

Cluster of buildings and resource point. The buildings don't do anything yet, just scenery. I was running out of white bricks to make the snow mountains and decided to make these. I had a lot of fun making them.

Image

Another cluster of buildings.

Image

I really like this one.

Image

Action shot! Small engagement. The orange player owns the resource point, but the blue player has 3 marine squads nearby ready to capture it!

What do you guys think?

This seems like the kinda thing you and a friend could play during a free hour of study hall with a desk or two and I want to do that.

The chrome crystal is probably from an Aquazone set.

Nonetheless, I really like that battlefield!

Excellent job. I love the structure designs as well as the easy-to-produce vehicles. I'm going to show this off to some of my Brikwars companions.
