Did PB actually delete all the images?
When Dropbox messed up the links, the images were still there on DB.

No, the images are still there. Still have to fix the forum posts with new links to a different hosted image or to the wiki. I've done it to one post so far and I already want to tear my eyes out. I don't think I will do it to the big ones, like For Great Justice. I think I'll just upload the narrative to the wiki in toto and link to it in the thread.

What I did for ZZD is:RedRover wrote:So how do I start the agonizing process of getting my shit back?
6: I went to Warhead's photobucket album and hit the "Download Album" button on the right side
7: uploaded the album to a new server
8: Used a text editor on each post to do a batch find-and-replace on all the links, changing the old server address to the new one. In this case, it was:
- find "http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk12 ... ie%20Dawn/"
replace with "brikwars.com/forums/images/warhead/"
10: posted the revised post
And that's it.

Go to photobucket and use the snipping tool (get it if you don't already have it) to get back all of your images, then repost them on another site
Re: Photofuckit up for customers.
I have all the images saved, well most, it's mostly just the replacing. Jimmy rigging some sort of find and replace seems helpful'

Photobucket is locking down huge chunks of internet history
Photobucket, one of the internet’s most longstanding image repositories, recently shocked its users by quietly changing its terms of service without announcing that it would begin charging $400 per year to allow users to hotlink their images, preventing people from easily embedding the images they’ve uploaded to Photobucket on other websites. Though the term is nearly archaic now, in earlier internet times, when images were big and server load capacity was small, hotlinking was a big deal; Photobucket was among the crucial free web storage systems that allowed you to freely upload and share images wherever you liked.
The result is that the internet’s “Web 2.0” middle period — which began sometime around 2003, when Photobucket was founded, and ran through 2008 or so, when social media took off — was dominated by sites and blog posts built around Photobucket images. But now Photobucket has blocked these images from appearing, which effectively decimates the internet’s archive of those middle years.
The change at Photobucket comes just as SoundCloud has announced massive layoffs, reportedly telling staff that it currently only has enough money to stay in business another quarter. Though SoundCloud has insisted that it’s going to be fine for the long term and that its users’ data is safe, the warning has given everyone time to prepare for the worst-case scenario.
No matter the outcome, though, in concert with the Photobucket news, SoundCloud’s fate could pose another huge threat to longstanding, beloved internet archives — a stark reminder that while the internet may be forever, it’s only as permanent as the servers in which we trust.

I'm not too sad as I think most of my battles were fun at the time, but not timeless and potentially kinda crappy looking back. There are a few that I might want to preserve though as (imho) some did reach a pretty high level of quality. Since they're still in my Photobucket account, I'd just have to transition them somewhere. Of course, I have thousands of pictures. What approach would you guys suggest?

Re: Photofuckit up for customers.
Some of your battles were definitely worth keeping (Killing Time especially), and some of them (part of Andelmere) are still up because you used Brickshelf for them. Imgur has unlimited storage space, so a lot of people will probably be headed to them instead. Beyond that you might consider restoring your battles and just making new (updated!) armory posts.Bragallot wrote:I'm not too sad as I think most of my battles were fun at the time, but not timeless and potentially kinda crappy looking back. Edit: Don't use Imgur, see below.

Re: Photofuckit up for customers.
So I was reading Imgur's terms of service when I came across this little notice:
Dafuq? Does this refer to linking or embedding images or what? Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere

Re: Photofuckit up for customers.
Maybe? From what it looks imgur has been trying to turn itself into a reddit-like community or some shit. I'm not 100% sure whether to dump all my other pics on flickr, given they might also pull the plug on them someday.

Re: Photofuckit up for customers.
Who knows, from what I've read Imgur has recently made it significantly harder to find image tags for people to link out with. I guess I'll probably end up using Flickr and hope they don't start pulling shit like this.Duerer wrote:Maybe?
