Yeah, I gather it shares plot elements but isn't really the same story overall.  Also, the anime book apparently has very little to do with the original german silent film.  So the anime is kind of a multidirectional homage and an artistic attempt to make something new for the oncoming anime era of popular culture.  Maybe that's why I didn't like it.

All Shinkai movies are kind of the same. Anything he didn't do in 5cm Per Second or Voice of the Distance Star?
