Red Faction: Guerrilla

Post by Bonn-o-Tron » Wed Jun 03, 2009 2:35 pm

So, after playing the demo for Volition's latest endeavor in the Red Faction series, I knew instantly that I had to buy it when it was released Tuesday (yesterday).

Holy shit.
If you aren't willing to put down the money for a purchase, or even a rental, at least treat yourself to the demo. It has the greatest "destructible environment" engine I've seen in a game yet (although, I haven't played Battlefield: Bad Company yet, so I don't know how it compares).

What also makes this game great is that it isn't just a typical, linear shooter. It's open world and mission-based, which allows you to roam around, explore, and destroy at your own leisure.

Seriously. Try this game, right now.

I saw commercials on TV for it the other night, and had never heard of it before then. However, it's oppressingly socialist themes had me excited like no other, and I wanted to take a look at it.

You have now convinced me that it's awesome. Would you say it's worth buying?

Yeah I saw that same commercial last night.

So after further play is it still awesome?

After reading the web site I get the impression that you can roam free doing the various activities that diminish the bad guy control of an area. Also responding to events that occur. Which is pretty much what you said already.

Definitely.

Yes, still awesome. I'm on the verge of liberating the first sector, I just need to do one final mission which involves driving an armoured truck through a couple dozen tracking arrays (which includes the many guards defending them).

In a nutshell, the point of the game is to free each sector from the control of the military corporation EDF. To do this, you have to:

A) Complete the main, story missions for that sector (there's only like 3 or 4 each)
B) Lower the EDF Control to 0

To lower the Control, you basically destroy any EDF property marked on your map, and by also doing side-missions (like responding to events, as you said). There's also something else, called Morale.
As the Morale increases, you earn better rewards from missions, and it also increases the likeliness of citizens joining you in fighting the EDF.

So are you fighting for or against socialism?

Regardless, it still sounds bad ass. I'll have to check it out.

Socialism's always fun to fight for. Maybe not so much live under, but definitely fight for.
