Firefly is spaceships and sci-fi with subtle (well, not really subtle) Old West themes. The guns kind of look like six-shooters, people dress like cowboys, etc.
I think sci-fi in the Old West would be more like pioneers meeting with a wrecked space ship or miners coming across some lost artifact while digging.
