[RK18] The Women's Sanctuary

Postby Dienekes22 » Tue Jan 23, 2018 2:46 am

Image

It's another beautiful day for Sasha, hunter extraordinaire. She walks through the pleasant meadow back to the Sanctuary without a kill, a rare occasion indeed.

Image

The Sanctuary is a place of safety for women and children away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Image

It sits on one of the main thoroughfares, a place of respite for the weary traveler. Madeline operates a small roadside shop while Marybeth waits for Sasha to bring her something to cook.

Image

Natalia busies herself cleaning while Jordyn works on a new security wall. Annabelle, the master of the outfit, watches everyone move to and fro.

Image

Henrietta washes dishes in the creek while Garrett rushes to help her.

Image

Catherine catches a fish as the nearby blacksmith, Andrus, enjoys the cool morning in the distance.

Image

A weary traveler makes his way to the Sanctuary.

Image

The calm morning is broken by the trudging of heavy feet. "Ahhh," Rowan sighs, before he turns around.

Image

"To arms, men!" he cries out, "Loot and pillage anything you can find!"

Image

"Not so fast!" called Artor, "your days of violence end today!"

Image

"All that stands between these peaceful women and are ancient foe is us!" he says over the battle cries of his men.

Image

"I suppose we are undermanned here," a man says.

Image

"SIKE!" Stevyn calls out from his dragon.

Image

"Death to the enemy!"

Image

"Stevyn! Friend!" Artor's voice carries across the field, "Together we will make quick work of this Aethannian foe!"

Image

"Oh, Artor," Stevyn said softly, "Haven't you heard? The world is rebuilt and old alliances crumble to dust. Liossa is the punching bag of the world no more!"

Image

The women arm themselves, sharp blades clanging to life.

Image

"Excuse me," Xenophon interjects, "you are forgetting someone."

Image

The Greks march into view, "Secure this foothold, men," Xenophon says slowly, "We must hold this ground for the rest of the army."

Image
Image

The battle begins

Image

Sasha looses an arrow, barely parried by an Aethannian shield.

Image
Image

The other women form up, unsure who is their enemy.

Image

The Aethannian's waste no time, sprinting into action.

Image

Sasha is skewered, the first casualty of the battle.

Image

The blacksmith arms himself with one of his creations.

Image
Image

The Vasli split up, moving to support the sisters of the Sanctuary on both fronts.

Image

Stevyn dives, spear bloodied on the closest foe.

Image

Response fire from the crossbows wounds his beast as it climbs back into the sky.

Image

Meanwhile, the spears advance, a javelin readied to throw.

Image

Both men fail to kill their targets.

Image

The crossbows, however, bring down Madeline.

Image

This greatly upsets Marybeth.

Image

Grek spears and bows march towards the fight.

Image
Image
Image

The battle has begun in earnest.

Image

The woman close with the Liossans with fury.

Image

Jordyn's hammers bring down a spearman.

Image

Marybeth gouges a crossbowman to death.

Image

The bridge is covered by Catherine and Henrietta.

Image

The traveler wasn't fast enough.

Image

Bloody axes shake from clenched fists and insults hurtle into the air.

Image

They make their way onto the bridge.

Image

Rowan gazes into the teeth of the advancing Greks, thinking he has an opening.

Image

They charge, but the Greks are disciplined.

Image

Right before the fatal moment, well placed arrows bring down Xenophon.

Image

The Greks miss badly and the lines collide. Grek armor holds strong.

Image

Crossbow bolts miss as infantry advances toward the line of women and Liossans.

Image

"Fear not! We are here to rescue you from many perils!" Artor says to Catherine.

Image

"Take your sword somewhere else!" she says in defiance, "We can protect our own!"

Image

Stevyn brings his spear down again, cutting a man to pieces.

Image

He lands, dragon's teeth opening with fury. The fire from his throat fails to expel.

Image

Annabelle dies to a grisly spear wound as the last crossbow retreats, his bolt sailing wide.

Image

The Greks make space and bring their long spears down into place.

Image

Two men fall to the dust.

Image

The archers spin into place but their arrows miss their marks.

Image

Andrus strikes from behind, killing an archer.

Image
Image
Image

So the battle continues.

Image

Marybeth strikes with two blades but the bowman miraculously parries her with his crossbow.

Image
Image

Hammers and a broom swing into action, claiming his life with bloody bristles.

Image

The women wait for nothing, throwing themselves into a fight.

Image

The man dies, tossed from the bridge by a fish.

Image

As Andrus engages the second archer in futility as Rowan and his last axe safely disengage and sprint to their allies.

Image

The archers follow close behind after missed shots.

Image

Vasli crossbows miss the dragon.

Image

The infantry gangs up on the dragon, swords ringing in the air.

Image

It screams and dies, tossing Stevyn from his back.

Image

Marybeth successfully counters her way to revenge.

Image

"You're late," Jordyn says simply.

Image

Stevyn prepares to make his stand, spear broken into a sword.

Image

Andrus and the archers continue their stalemate.

Image

The spears march forward, slow and steady.

Image
Image
Image
Image

The battle wages on, blood soaking into the grass.

Image
Image

Henrietta and Catherine breathe their last amidst furious axes.

Image

The other women move toward the bridge, now lost to the enemy.

Image

The Aethannians hold it in strength, led by Rowan and his loud voice.

Image

The women hold their position, strengthened by soldiers.

Image

Stevyn's stand has begun.

Image

His armor holds and his blade bites deep.

Image

His shield stops bolts singing with malevolence and his sword searches for blood.

Image

He reaches the bowmen with haste.

Image

He kills the first and readies himself for the second.

Image

The archers fall to the Andrus' spear.

Image
Image
Image

The battle rages on, men dead and dying.

Image

Stevyn slays another man.

Image

He's engaged by two, backpedaling with shield high.

Image

He falls, wounded deep and weapons lost. "Do it..." he croaks.

Image

Artor stands above him, heavy sword balanced in his hand.

Image
Image

And so Stevyn dies. "Godspeed, dragon rider," Artor whispers.

Image

The three sides square off, daring the others to move first.

Image

"Give them nothing!" Rowan calls, "Let them come to us!"

Image
Image

The battle nears its conclusion.

Image

An archer struggles to hold his bow, sweat and fear taking their toll.

Image

He falters and the arrow flies true, Natalia's life bleeding onto the earth.

Image
Image

The outside closes in with a roar.

Image

Jordyn tackles a man off the bridge, hammers flying with fury.

Image

As Jordyn kills her foe, an Aethannian slays his target. Madeline and another soldier fill the breach.

Image

The Aethannians have no answer for the long Grek spears and the rear guard dies together.

Image

Pulling out their swords, two Greks advance onto the bridge.

Image

Artor climbs his way onto the bridge, bloody sword aloft and deadly.

Image

Rowan rams Artor to push him off his bridge.

Image

Artor pulls Rowan with him and they tumble down together, weapons and shields falling away.

Image

They hastily retrieve their weapons. "You and me!" Rowan cries.

Image

The Aethannians are cleared from the bridge and the two sides size one another up.

Image

Andres has no answer for the long spears.

Image

Artor signals his men away and readies himself for the fight to come.

Image
Image

They fly around one another, axe and spear locked in a deadly dance.

Image

But Rowan gets the last word, his axe biting deep and bringing Artor down.

Image

He tries to flee his enemy, hell bent on revenge, but his sprint comes up short.

Image

He makes his move.

Image

Rowan's last stand ends, the last Aethannian on the field.

Image

The stalemate lengthens as the field grows quiet. "We have an offer for you..." the Grek says.

Image
Image

The Greks watch their side of the creek with thick armor and long spears. Drums beat in the distance as men and material march to the new front. The Greks have their foothold for their invasion.

Image

Marybeth consoles Jordyn as Garrett stands idly. Their are the last of their Sanctuary.

Image

A Vasli swordsman looks back to his officer, now the highest ranking man alive. "What will we do now?" he asks.

Image

The officer doesn't know.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

And so the battle ends with an uneasy truce between a new invasion force and a vastly undermanned guard.

That. Was. Beautiful.
The narrative's tone is really stark, something I don't see here often and I like that. The fact that all the civs are individually named also helps the tone. It was epic, dramatic, very little comedy. The photo quality is also great. Can't wait to see some of your other batreps.

Thank you, all.

I don't think I'm very good at comedy in Brikwars battles, it comes off as too forced, so I've been trying to be a little "harsher" in tone. Although I don't even know if that's the right word.

I liked it a lot, it is a nice change from the unending sarcasm and in jokes.

PREPARE TO BE JUDGED...

Okay, what criteria do we have?
FUN: 16/20 While it was entertaining to watch, and lots of weird stuff happened, it could have been a little crazier. That said, death by broom and by FISH? Awesome!
VIOLENCE: 8/10 That was a LOT of carnage! Could have been more general destruction, but plenty of minifig death makes up for it.
PHOTOGRAPHY: 9/10 Really good shots. A few more general shots would have been nice, and some differing viewpoints would be great, but otherwise they were a clear indicator of what happened and how.
WRITING: 9/10 Excellent premise, nice storyline. Great, concise descriptions of the action! Could have been a little more entertaining with a bit of it - more role-playing for the battle, but as battle reports go everything fits the bill!
STORY: 7/10 While the storyline was nice, and the context was there, no concrete mention of any sort of New Year. Could have elaborated more on characters. Still, pretty good.

Immortal War: Not mentioned.

Seriously, this was a great battle report, with lots of action, some fun vingettes, and good writing. Very serious compared to some stuff, but more of this is a great way to go. That and hitting people with fish. Awesome. :)

I don't mean to dispute your score, but I realize I forgot to explain how this battle fits the theme, since the reference in the report is small and easy to miss.

In the past the Greeks, Red Lions of Liossa, and Green Dragons of Vasluxia were all basically on the same team against aggression by the raising Gold Crowns of Aethannia. This was because I had way more Aethannians than anyone else. Now I've pumped up the numbers of each faction so they are roughly identical, meaning I don't have to artificially level the field any direction.

At the beginning of the report, Artor is still operating with this concept in mind and calls out to Stevyn in friendship. Stevyn comments that the world is made new (and I had planned him to make a comment about reconstruction but... oops) and the old alliances are no longer valid.

I didn't make battle notes as I took pictures so I ended up with one sentence that poorly explained the above.

Again, not trying to rules lawyer anything. Your review is fair.

Hmm... I'll be honest, had you included this in the beginning of the battle report, I likely would have scored your story marks higher. There was a decent tale there, but no context for any of it. This kind of context is nice for battles like this. It was still an excellent report though, and quite entertaining.

Can the gun aim upwards? Because on mine, it keeps flopping down and it's a bit annoying.
