''"Math is everything."''

∂V Capital is a quantitative hedge fund that heavily emphasizes quantitative analysis and mathematical finance techniques to trade in securities and other assets to generate returns for clients. Founded by Dr. Itô, a Trattorian professor of mathematics at TTI, ∂V Capital from the start has only hired the mathematical elite of the galaxy, with a staff replete with Fields Medals, International Math Olympiad gold medalists, and Putnam fellows. ∂V Capital currently has ₮30 trillion Trattorian dollars worth of assets under management.

With this much mathematical talent concentrated in a single firm, ∂V Capital directed its staff to develop increasingly complicated and arcane mathematical financial models, starting with the Black-Scholes model. Dr. Itô himself contributed Itô calculus, an extension of calculus using a stochastic generalization of the Riemann-Stieltjes integral to model Brownian motion and semimartingales. Many other techniques are used, such as stochastic calculus and Monte Carlo methods, with more recent models addressing the deficiencies of the original Black-Scholes models such as the volatility smile.

Trades are executed automatically and at a high frequency based on algorithms, and like [[Three Sigma Investments]], ∂V Capital invests heavily in the lowest-latency computing and FTL networking infrastructure possible, where even nanoseconds could have a huge impact on margins.

∂V Capital has been criticized for taking much of Trattoria’s top mathematical talent and putting them to work on relatively useless financial speculation rather than the usual scientific research, as well as the financial impact of its high-frequency trading. To compensate, ∂V Capital is a proud sponsor of various mathematical competitions and outreach efforts to encourage math education.

The company name ∂V Capital is pronounced “Partial V Capital” (since the ∂ symbol is used to denote partial derivatives), and its employees will shun and shame anyone who lacks the mathematical knowledge to properly pronounce it. The name arises from the Greeks, a set of variables that are all first or second-order partial derivatives of a financial derivative’s value (V) with respect to various factors. They are measures for financial risk, thus reflecting ∂V Capital’s bold attitude in pursuing alpha (aka profit).
