I agree.
Dozens of minifigs beating the crap out of each other = fun
Tiny tanks or spaceships shooting the crap out of each other = awesome
Hordes of 1x1 round plates killing each other = mystifying

The problem with radios is that they're boring, because you can't kill somebody with one. You, my friend, are a problem solver.

The VTOL looks pretty nifty, though I had to guess a bit at the overall shape because none of the pictures show the whole thing. The hardsuit is cool too; it's an efficient design that looks highly mass-producible.

For really big guns this just seems like a weaker version of the 2001 mass driver rules. The Golden Bough would easily be a MkIV or MkV mass driver, which can deal up to 32d10 (over an 8" radius) or 60d10 (over a 10" radius), respectively.
