Lots of games sound like this one; thus the need for a unique trait, if possible multiple. Thanks for posting the link, though, we could certainly draw some inspiration from it.

@Silvah: I don't know for certain yet, but hopefully it will be.

@dilanski: Building ships from scratch is an interesting idea, worth playing around with. If possible (and I know this idea is WAY out there), but if we could build a markdown system for the game that allows relatively easy modding, this could help that concept along quite a bit. Not only can you build your own ships, you get to assign all of their stats and etc.

P.S.EDIT: Turret hard points, go!

Okay, I just played around with Construct for about three hours, and this sounds doable.

Awesome. We still need a twist, though, and I'm still fresh outta more ideas.

If the people here are involved, the fact that it's COMPLETELY INSANE should distinguish it enough.

I'll continue spriting, then, while we all mull over the details.

I'll keep making occasional posts to introduce new ideas. Feel free to put your own ideas out there.

I love it when you post that smiley. I can feel the gears turning across the 'tubes. It's great.

That smiley is my favorite smiley. I need to get a shirt with that on it.

Boom! Idea!

What if, when you have a 'commander' (I don't know, certain size space station, high enough morale, or something else entirely, not really sure yet.), you can control a ship? It'd be like the commander is giving orders to everyone on the ship. I'm a whiz at making ship movement like that, so it should be easy enough to do.

Anyway, I'm off to start putting together a loose demo, please give feedback.

Ah, interesting. And from there, the ship you've taken personal control of will have a set of new special orders, perhaps? Faction specific actions that can boost morale or dish out larger amounts of damage normal?

We could even take it a step further; taking control of a ship isn't limited to just commander, it could go all the way down the chain of command. Each ship could have its own chain of command, and then as it fights, that ship can gain experience, working its way up to "promotions" through the system, ending at Commander, which would give a fleet-wide bonus, as well as a few special things for the ship in question. Bonuses up until that point would of course be lesser in nature.

Or better yet, not simply a CHAIN of command, but a command tree, so that when you reach critical forks in the promotion line you get to choose which way to branch into. For example, you could either go Gunnery Sergeant, which would modify your ship's range and firepower slightly, or to a Naval Engineer, which would cause your ship to move slightly faster and have a slightly higher internal integrity.

Also a good idea, but not quite what I meant. I meant you literally take control of the ship. You steer, and control the main weapon(s). Turrets would be automated.

No, I understood that part entirely. Thanks for clarifying, though.

Working off of some sprites I had from an old project, but here you go:

Awesome. Is this still all in Construct, or are you working with your GML still?

P.S. The sprites are kinda neat. Might use them if you let me spruce them up a bit :P
