Note: I have decided to buff the combat rifle so it's a more viable option. Added rocket launcher and grenades. You can also carry an additional piece of equipment, but you will suffer a -3 to all rolls in combat (getting extra equipment being a different matter, see below). If that interests anyone, you'd want to check that now. I will permit you to trade one piece of equipment for another, but you still have to start with 2.

The RAV has space for 4 pieces of spare equipment. If you want to obtain any extra equipment, however, Dr. Dundati will have to clear it with the armory (Negotiation). The quartermaster is not permitted to make dealings with anyone else.

Grenades are always useful and a rifle might help in guarding a basecamp.

As for me specifically, no, I'm fine with the equipment I chose.

Try though you might, you cannot manage to get the vehicle to scan so far away from where you are. You decide to wait until your leader decides your group is fully equipped and ready to go.

As the sun sets and it goes dark, you decide it's time to set up camp. You haven't spotted any enemy patrols, thankfully.
Now it is time to take shifts for watch. Whenever you figure out shift order, roll vitality. Remember that there are 17 hours in the night, and each roll will get you through 3 hours.

Recon rolls are separate. You can do one per shift. -3 because of darkness. You can use an uplink to negate that.
