Who's still playing it and if yes, what ports or WADs do you prefer to use?
These are some of my fav mods, that I mostly play Doom with:

I haven't played doom since my dad played it on the amiga 1200 . . . I think I might give it a shot if I find a decent download.

While BD itself is p good, it spawned a new gen of kiddies, that bug other modders to make their shit BD-compatible. You should try it with Demonsteele, tho. It's fun!
Another nice mod I found is The Tei-Tenga Incident. So far, it's still in beta and only the first episode is fully playable, but it looks pretty solid for a mod based on the Doom Bible.

I think i played through Ultimate Doom like 2 years ago using ZDoom.
During my pre internet days i didn't get my hands on a lot of mods but i remember two of them. One was a Beavis&Butthead mod replacing some monsters with the two characters while the other one replaced various sounds with a dude saying "Helmut Kohl".
What kept me interested in Doom for a long time was making levels though. I made a bunch of multiplayer maps that we played in our LAN session. Still got the .wads somewhere. And yes, i built my school.

Hey guize, I made a little something!
Well ok, it's just a chaingun, that fires much faster. Wanted to try out some coding and stuff.
EDIT: Started with making sprites (converting from LDD screenshots) for a soldier, wielding that rifle. However, the graphics look quite out of place in the Doom game world. Any ideas, how to improve them?

It worked! I made a functional enemy for ZDoom!
It can be spawned by tying following line into the console:
I have been playing the Hell On Earth pack with Brutal Doom v20b, Extra Textures and DoomMetalVol4.
That stuff together makes a great experience. Levels are super well done, interesting and on par with faster gameplay.

From the same guy who made Russian Overkill comes Trailblazer. It's a fun weapons mod with things like machete boomerangs and crafting ammo/weapon upgrades with spare parts.
