I read Boatmurdered like a year ago. DF is a fun game, but I could never get past that infuriating text UI. I manged to get an isometric 3D mod up eventually, but it was never updated and so my DF days ended.

There's a program somewhere that converts DF maps to Minecraft ones.

I love the text based graphical tileset it gives the game character, the menu driven UI was initially confusing but once you get to know it it's easy and fast.
How it gives each individual dwarf a set of likes and dislikes as well as what they experienced recently Is great, All my legendarys get given rooms to match, If a legendary miner loves copper he/she gets a copper statue in his/her room Simply because their awesome. Nobles can go fuck them selves, what have they done for use? Over here we have a stone crafter who makes stone crafts faster than out miners can make storage space Yet you nobles do jack-shit and demand that he gives his room to you?!
Normally I give my nobles Lava heated rooms, The lava washes gently into the room to give a nice calming warmness.

In my last fortress, all dwarves who got elected mayor were awesome brewers. It's all about how intelligent your voters are.

I've yet to survive too the point of new mayors... My defence straturgy is along the lines of "SHIT siege! CLOSE THE DOUBLE DRAWBRIDG!" (half a year passes) "thank god their gone time to expand my military with the new migrants." 1 month later... *A vile Force of darkness has arived* "FU WORLD!" *starts digging deep to find magma and mass producing magma-safe pump-components*, *Builds pump stack from magma to surface* FUCK YOU GOBLINS!.

I seem to have picked one of the most borring places possible for my Fortress... Or I'm just digging in the wrong direction... Only 3 Goblins have turned up to attack and all three walked straight into some Cage Traps... I'm currently buliding a defense tower, which I'll probably never need and looking for magma... and running out of barrels...

The Stupid Dwarves have filled all my barrels with Plump Helmets and I've only got about 6 not in use, with will be filled with booze, then emptied and one or two will be filled with food instead...
I'll ethier be in trouble with the Elves or run out of booze... probably beter run out of trees instead...

Elves are an expendable resource. Booze is not.

Elves aren't expendable! I've found that as you harvest their hides they come in greater numbers  .
I traded with the elves ONCE, I then after having traded locked them in and killed them, Resulted in FUN due to a elven siege the next year.
