A Question (NOT a Forum-Battle, but related)

Post by All-Bricks United » Mon Oct 05, 2009 7:37 pm

I've a limited number of baseplates (and many of them are, well, either old and broken, or so hilly as to be rendered somewhat useless), and am considering a forum-battle (at some point in the future, if I decide I care, and if my wife takes the dog with her when she visits her family for a week).

What's a good size for, say, a battle featuring ~4 or 5 5-man teams, in the style of a common FPS game (ie, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Assault, or some other Halo or Counter-Strike game mode), baseplate-wise?

The most I can manage is likely four full-size baseplates (arranged into a large square, and with futures), with four half-size plates off of each side as a "starting area" or "base."

So, would that be sufficient (just looking around, it seems like it might be)?

Are people too intolerant of no-plate battles to tolerate one of those (where several plates are used for battlefield features, but the whole of the field is not on plates)?

Just some thoughts (if this belongs more elsewhere, I apologize).

A lot of people do non-plate battles. I certainly have before, several of my battles were just cool LEGO terrain features on top of my dresser.

So it's not really an issue, but if you feel baseplates are absolutely necessary, then four should be a decent size, if a bit up-close and personal for 4-5 teams.

But up-close and personal is the way it should be done :)

it depends on howverticle your battle field is and how chopped up the fields of fire, the less chopped up the more area your going to need, while if there is more stuff in the way blocking someone from killing another, well less is needed

Ah, good point, Strana.

Although I think that might be crediting a bit too much strategy to the BrikWars universe.

Never listen to what Pesgores says about baseplates, but you already knew that.

I think baseplates are only good for putting decorations and such and you don't need gigantic baseplates to make buildings. A 32x16 or a 32x32 is fine IMO.

Any smooth green table-mat works just as good (or better, as demonstrated by fryslayer)than a baseplate for cosmetics, but baseplates are good for urban terrain. If you go with urban, then let me suggest that you make large buildings with multiple entry points, and preferably multiple floors, because urban is ossum!

I prefer baseplates over putting all my guys on platforms, but don't let the amount of baseplates I have (decent amount) determine the limit for the size of my battles. That's the job of my table, rather :s

I only have one baseplate, so if I ever do a forum battle it's probably going to be in a multi-story building...
