I think a lot of factions start as the stalest one-note riffs on overplayed cliches... and then by the time you're putting together your second vehicle you're magically coming up with funny twists that make it unique. There's something about digging in and working with dumb ideas that opens up the brain and makes better ideas start happening.

A way I made my subfactions is I just threw together all my minifigs who looked similar and thought up why they hate other minifigs, that might also be Worth a try.
