Duyên, The Thread-Ripper

Duyên is an arbiter of The After. A dark and mysterious being that has a hand in the fate of minifigures once they die. Clothed in the very fabric of reality itself, Duyên’s role differs from the other arbiters in that it actively hunts those that defy fate. Walking the mortal world looking to right the way of things. Destroying rogue immortals and other minifigs that refuse to die.

Image

Recently, a rather uninspiring mage found a way to consume his variants and escape the after.Such hubris cannot be allowed. What’s more, that knowledge cannot be allowed to propagate out into the brikverse. It is only a matter of time before Duyên finds him, and rights the cosmic wrong of his existence.

Image

About this figure:

Concept wise I think The After is the coolest thing I’ve ever made. Which is a shame cuz after where do we go I never really intended to revisit it. That said, when making this figure I asked myself “how would a bunch of previously unchallenged immortal beings react to being humiliated?”

They probably would not take it well.

Image

The visual theme here is the thread of fate. And I think it comes through wonderfully. A couple key prints combine to highlight the overly long coat that manages to support the figs weight somehow, letting him seem like he's floating. The coat was made by layering quilt scraps and a belt loop over a custom trimmed Lego cape with fabric glue. Buttons and random thread stitches help to add a bit more texture. The bag of heads he carries is made from a piece of a mesh dice bag I got from our local game store.

Eō, The Witness

Eō was a rather bright and hopeful kid born in BR3928, as he grew up he was very aware of the prophecies that the brikverse would finally conclude in 3955. He worked diligently to prevent this end, but when the time came, the only thing he was able to prevent was his own death. When the brikverse collapsed it sent Eō hurdling through time back to BR0000. He experienced all of minifig existence in an instant. But that was not the end for him, now untethered from reality, Eō began bouncing through linear time. Experiencing the events and the end of the brikverse over, and over, and over again. A kids favorite figure lost to the carpet forever. A teenagers dismissive withdrawal into the dark ages. The creative death dealt to hobbyist builders by the city modular line. So many ends. What he once sought to prevent was now all he ever saw.

Once so brilliant, so promising. Now only a shell of himself.

Image

Eō cannot die, wills the Brikverse
Eō cannot speak, says the Brikverse
But he may keep his eyes.

And watch.

About this figure:
Image

For this competition I started experimenting with using fabric markers on custom capes, and the coat seen here is the one I was using as a test cape. After having scribbled over the cape a couple times i was reminded of a discarded torso I had pulled out of a box of thrifted bricks (the visor he wears on his back was also pulled from this lot). I was inspired to make a character themed around the figures that get thrown away, lost, or otherwise destroyed. And how that would affect them from their perspective. I really struggled with finding the right helmet piece and wasn’t even gonna use one until I settled on weathering one of the newer hoods.

Image

Something that really stands out on this figure compared to almost every other figure I’ve ever made is a complete lack of printing except for the eyes. This is by design. I was heavily inspired by the short story “I have no mouth and must scream” whose themes also inspired a bit of the thinkers lore a couple years ago. Initially I used the Mr. Knight head but pivoted to a skull after scraping off the mouth with an X-acto knife. I like the more enraged look of the skull. I feel like you’d be pretty mad if you had to continually experience the heat death of the universe.

Midas, The Loot Sentinel

Image

It’s said that deep in the void-core there is a great treasure. wealth unimaginable. Vast stores of every opulence known to minifig. What is or isn’t true however is hard to corroborate. Treasure hunters that travel to the core report running into a crystal automaton, animated from the wealth itself. That destroys those who ever get near to where the treasure is said to be hidden.

Image

About this figure:

Image

As I’ve been slowly added locations to my planet I felt there was room in the lore for an Atlantis style treasure. Maybe I’ll make a battle there maybe not. But I feel like it’s important for a setting to feel alive that there are things that are evidenced but never seen. That the place is bigger than what you initially let in on. When making the figure I was focused on making someone that would guard such a place. I've wanted to use the Fortnite minifigure pieces for a while now and I feel like they match up nicely with the new crystal king body from Ninjago.

Lyle Saint-Steele

"Good soldier? HA! Imma fabulous soldier! AND I DON NEED NO ONE TO TELL ME" Llewelyn, was the hot shot Master Sergeant of the Thold command base. He, along with his good friend and more level headed commander Holten. Were responsible for almost all Iriorian interior logistics operations. Recently there has been unrest in the inner empire. A growing seed of doubt. Nervyr is missing and with the secretive Division: 41’s administrator calling the shots, the future looks very unclear.

Image

Normally doubts are no match for Lyle's quick wit and quicker mouth, but now that Commander Holten is also reportedly missing following the destruction of the capital city, Lyle wants answers. And with the administrator’s swift and brutal consolidation of power across the lower sphere, it seems he’s going to have to use more than just snappy words to get them.

Image

About this Figure:

Image

A lot of the time I will just make things, or factions, or dudes, and just figure out a use for them later. This was the case for the Iriorian rebels. I made them years ago and never used them for anything. With the story moving forward into the reunification arc, I feel like now is the ideal time from a narrative standpoint to bring them in. Small problem, they lack a hero, or any kind of characterization really.

Image

So when making Lyle, I asked myself, how do movements get started? Well it’s usually a combination of pent up negative sentiment towards the current regime, and a charismatic leader that is able to galvanize that sentiment into action. This Lyle had to be a hot shot, an underdog action hero. Someone you wanted to root for. Complete with big hair and a big heart and a missing best friend he wants answers for. Ties in all very nicely with the story bits i have going right now. Hopefully he shows up in a battle soon =D

Image

Parts wise this is all Dreamzzzz, star wars, and Ninjago stuff. Very on brand for me I'd say. The head is from a Horizon Zero Dawn set though, that's pretty fun.

BRIKTHULU

Image
The eternal bane of everything brikbuilt. Master of the all powerful D20. Now in bite size!

Do i even need to introduce this guy?!?!

Image

About this Figure:

i have wanted to make a Brikthulu minifigure for forever but there we're a couple hurdles to overcome. The main one is how do you contain that much power in such a small form. My answer? I also have fallen victim to the cast iron juicer craze. works great as a minifigure press. But also like, all the appropriate heads for this dude do not come in black which sucks.
My answer? spray paint. And it works.

Now, originally for the eyes i was going to detail paint on some yellow dots but after re-watching thunderbolts again this past week I was inspired by the void to do little dot eyes. very creepy.

Image
(Marvelstm The Voidtm as seen in Marvelstm Thunderboltstm do not sue me please)

The rest of the figure is pretty standard fare, I just tried to find the bits with the most interesting textures since it was going to be a monochrome figure. The new dragonian parts from this years Ninjago wave come in clutch.

Nervyr, The Lithomancer

An ancient and once powerful variant of Nervyr. Sensing a great evil, The Lithomancer had used seeing stones long ago to know of the terrible terrible fate that awaited him and all other Nerv variants. And while the Dark Ascension of the Prime Variant is an inevitable event, etched into the very afterlife iteself, you could be prepared for it. Theoretically.

Image

So that's just what the lithomancer tried to do. The dark magicks he turned too however corrupted his mind, and petrified his body, leaving him broken and helpless. knowing he can't beat prime nerv in this shape. he hides, cowardly trying to avoid a fate he knows will happen, maybe he can find a way to restore himself, before it is too late.

Image

About this Figure:

Fun fact this was the figure I started working on first for this competition, but finished it last. as I had to wait 2 weeks for the Arkham Angel minifigure to arrive in the mail so he could have real wings and a different face.

Image
(earlier version with the original face and wings, I feel like the crazed face in the final version fits the lore better)

I knew I wanted to do at least one new Nerv Variant for the figbarf, and since the Where do we go soap nerv has appeared (and died) in a bunch of different battles. I really fancied the idea that somehow these other variants know what awaits them, but the real awareness escapes them. This version knows knows though. like gory details and everything. I figure knowing that a version of you shreds your body and essence in the afterlife and absorbs your mind and power to resurrect himself would drive anyone mad. What lengths would you go to prevent that?

Image

The parts for this version are honestly super sick, the body is a Firestar toys Darth Sion that I had been holding on too for a year or so. Cape is from capes4minifigs, with custom rune detailing by yours truly. i used a cheap fabric marker and I am so stoked with how it came out.

Thanks for reading this far, if you did read this far that is. If you just looked at the pictures HOW DARE YOU I WORKED SO HARD ON THE LORE lol jk. its fine. But seriously, I put a ton of effort into making this more than 'just a bunch of nerv variants' which while fun last year, didn't really cut it creatively.

Duyên:
Style- 10 (Creepy as intended, this is such good customization)

Presentation- 5 (good pictures, gets the story across. Love the 'making of')
Thematic Potential- 10 (that can make for some creepy themes)

Eo:
Style- 8 (style is a little less than EO but still pretty cool)
Story- 8 (story is a little more fleshed out)
Presentation- 5 (good pictures)
Thematic Potential- 7 (has potential)

Midas:
Style- 7 (there is too much going on for my taste)
Story- 7 (could do with a little elaboration)
Presentation- 5 (the action pictures are cool)
Thematic Potential- 7 (decent enough)

Lyle:
Style- 8 (good coior scheme and details)
Story- 8 (good personal touch)
Presentation- 5 (very detailed)
Thematic Potential- 8 (this could indeed be the start of a movement)

BRIKTHULU:
Style- 9 (do we know this guy from somewhere?)
Story- 7 (a good diy story. And does brikthulu really need a story?)
Presentation- 4 (nice pictures but doesn't convey the power of this character)
Thematic Potential- 7 (how are you going to include this in a battle?)

Lithomancer:
Style- 10 (scary and creepy, just gives me chills this weird figure)
Story- 7 (could elaborate a little more)
Presentation- 5 (well done)
Thematic Potential- 8 (I would be scared facing that..)
