[HPH21] - Luminarian Merchant Ship Pulpiteer

Post by Gorvoslov » Sat Sep 11, 2021 8:50 pm

Image
With sea monster issues becoming less of a concern lately, the major kingdoms are all looking to go to sea again.

Image
One of the first vessels built by the Luminarian Church to head out to sea is the lightly armed merchant ship "Pulpiteer".

Image
Proudly bearing the Crown emblem of the Luminarian Church, they seek to bring enlightenment to all they encounter.

Image
Despite being a merchant ship, it's not totally unarmed. A small ballista in the bow is capable of handling small threats.

Image
Since sail technology is a bit of a lost art at the moment, a rudder is needed to be able to have moderate steering.

Image
Being a small ship, cargo capacity is fairly limited, but it can carry enough.

Image
Second view of cargo/main deck. More can be added in future when not limited to 100 parts.

Image
The vessel can run adequately with a small crew, even at combat stations. This is important for what I will hopefully be doing for Hellhunt this year.

Image
Parts breakdown. 96 shown. There are two more that I missed at this stage that I didn't notice until I mostly had this back together. Two 1x1 blue plates on the stern.

Image
Pieces missed in the parts layout shot.

Clever use of the boat hull parts to reduce the piece count, the whole thing has a proper Imperial style to it.

The use of parts to get this scale is ingenious, and it seems like a real threat on the board! But while being so big, that's also part of it's detriment; I would've loved for some more detail on it :/

The amount of detail you achieved here - thanks to some big parts as base - is outstanding. Especially I like the patterned sails. Photos could be a bit less shadowy / more cropped. Some nice background story.

I'm stepping in as Secondary. For the record, Gorvoslov sent me a message waiving his right to a secondary judge. 1) I didn't think that was fair. 2) I don't think any of us wanted to wait around again. And 3) I really appreciate that gesture; it is very much in the spirit of the event.

Style - 8
I enjoy the use of color to create a pattern on both the sails and the hull. The piece is instantly recognizable but, more importantly, every part of the vessel is recognizable too. The angled sails, the lantern, and the anchor are all great examples of this and elevate what would otherwise be a simple build.

Substance - 9
To get so big of a piece with so little parts is impressive. Every judge, I think, has remarked on the nice usage of the bigger hull parts to create the larger base on which the rest is built. It's blended well and, just looking at it, I wouldn't guess that it was made with 98 pcs.

The pictures are clear and easy to see. The lighting is directional, so it casts shadows but everything is against a white background that contrasts enough with the parts. I can see everything clearly and I don't need to guess what any of the parts are. What's important is the effort there.

Story - 8
There's a story here, a reason for the vessel to exist in the BrikVerse (not that anything needs a reason, it's just nice sometimes). It's simple and straightforward but it's solid.

What I'm getting from this is I definitely need to finally get a good photobooth set up.
