F-57 Rapier Fleet Defense Fighter

T.L.A. (Three Letter Acronym) ace pilot Maverick stands next to the newest addition to the T.L.A. Navy's arsenal. The F-57 Rapier is an advanced transatmospheric fighter, designed to act as a multi-role heavy fighter in atmosphere and low orbit, and a long-range fleet defense vessel in deep space.

This was probably one of the most frustrating things I have ever built. With the exception of the cockpit the entire interior of the vessel is structural supports, sometimes set at angles that are probably found only in this spacecraft and R'lyeh. Even now, the compact spaces have led to some problems with the landing gear and canopy movement.

Image
The Rapier's lifting body design gives it the high fuel-to-structural-mass ratio needed for prolonged space maneuvers, without sacrificing the streamlining needed for high-performance atmospheric flight.

Image
The Rapier's main weapon is a Mk.IV laser cannon designed to shoot down fighters and anti-capital ship missiles (the ship's primary role in space; it is not designed to engage capital ships, a task for which the T.L.A. prefers missiles). T.L.A. laser cannons are more cumbersome than those wielded by the Immortals and Assyrians (among others) and require a large, complex system of focusing lenses.

Image
The T.L.A. Navy distinguishes itself from the ground forces by adding yellow, rather than white, to the basic gray color schemes of their ships.

Oops! Moving on...

Side. Since this is a test flight the Rapier carries only minimum ordinance, but the nose cone of a missile can be seen poking out beneath the wing.

Image
Propulsion is provided by a fusion drive torch and two jet turbine engines. In space, the turbines can be sealed and flooded with fuel to increase the ship's endurance. Secondary maneuvering jets provide attitude control. They can also be used in atmosphere to increase maneuverability, but this is a dangerous gamble and requires a skilled pilot to keep the ship from spinning out of control.

Image
Ventral view, showing the two Mk.II missiles carried for ground combat. I originally expected this ship to be about 8" long: clearly, it's more like 10. I'll need to adjust its armament accordingly. Eventually I'll also produce smaller missile pods that carry counter-missiles for space combat, but right now I don't have the parts for that.

That looks sweet and smooth really great job.

How does the cockpit open?

Not very well. There are two hinge bricks supporting each of the 2 pieces that make up the cockpit, but the angle they can open to is severely limited by the wing getting in the way. The angle you saw them at in the first picture is as far as they go.

This is extremely sweet, really nice the way you did the engines.

I thought I already saw a road baseplate in some of your games. Anyway, this is from a set that's almost 14 years old; I doubt it's still in production, although there's probably an almost identical one on the market.

Thanks to everybody else who commented.

Really nice. This one looks like something that could be posted at The Brothers Brick rather than here. :o

It's been a long time since I've left a comment in here, but I really fucking love this thing.

A few dashes of critism though - I would have tried to keep the general shape of the craft, while placing the cockpit further forwards, another note is - this thing needs a bigger fucking gun. Take the main laser and turn it into some form of dual barrel (or better yet for the unique design - a triple barrel) configuration - if they require space for focusing lenses and the like - some form of rotary weapon would add a hell of a lot more firepower while not adding to much bulk to the craft.

These points out of the way, I seriously fucking love this thing - and I feel inspired to go back to the drawing board with my own fighter design.

Got any plans for a bomber any time soon?

The cockpit is in literally the ONLY place I could fit it. The craft is so narrow from top to bottom, and needs a huge amount of interior structure to support the various angled pieces that form the wings, that the front end of the ship is more or less completely solid. There's barely enough room for the front wheel well. I want to add some space for a weapons bay but that's iffy at best.
The laser cannon was never really meant as a primary weapon; I always intended this ship to be mainly a missile boat. Although it's shown carrying only two missiles, it has the hardpoints to carry up to six, though it probably won't be able to fire them all at once. Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely repost once I've built more weapons.

Next up will probably be a gunship.

I'd love to have a full-sized one of these.

Oh shut the fuck up Shadowscythe, this the best fighter I've seen on our forums and one of my favorites in general. If the photography was a little better this would be on The Brothers Brick.
