As a follow-up, the Klone base plates are Make-It Blocks... and for a dollar at the Dollar Tree, they do the job surprisingly well. (I think they are 4 or 5 bucks at Wal-Mart.)
For zombies I used Minifig stats, never sprinted, and if a figure was grabbed by a zombie, any zombie could make a bite attack (as an S melee weapon). If they had any bright ideas, rolled odd/even to see if it actually took (like the soldier grabbing the unexploded ordnance).
Had a fun time, think I more or less followed enough rules to roll dice more or less properly.
