The patrol makes their way through the frigid scrubland.
“Sir, it should be just over that ridge.”
“Good, let’s check it out and get this over with. Team, spread out and keep your eyes open!”
They approach the ruins cautiously, ready to obliterate anything out of place.
It appears they are the first to visit the site in decades. The group takes a collective sigh of relief.
“Hard to imagine these people dominated the world for so long and this is all they left behind. A strong breeze could knock over what’s left.”
“They’re still strong, make no mistake. At least they finally left us alone.”
The newest member of the group scans the area.
The wind picks up and blows through the pines.
A loud crack echoes from the distance as a team member goes down.
More cracks and another soldier is killed.
“Contact front! Get down!” shouts the squad commander.
They scramble to get into defensive positions. The blasts from the advanced weapons of the enemy keep them pinned.
The rookie looks over at his fallen comrade, his motionless body forever burned into his memory.
“Get HQ on the comms now! We need help.” the squad leader orders. “How the hell did they even find us?”
“No good sir, comms are jammed.”
“There is no need for violence. Join us in peace and harmony.” calls out one of the enemy soldiers. “We will forgive all trespasses against us.”
Two troops flank the position as their leader distracts the team.
The rookie leaps out and takes revenge for his comrades.
Pop! Pop! Pop!
The assailants go down.
“I forgive you… for we have loved you from before the world’s foundation…” the enemy soldier says.
"What the hell.... ?"
Seizing the moment, the rest of the team retaliates and takes out the enemy patrol as they retreat.
“You may not want it, but I die for you…” A soldier calls out as he goes down. One enemy escapes.
They survey the dead, making sure they are in fact dead.
“Nice work, rookie.”
“Why are they saying they love us?” he asks, voice shaking.
“Because they’re fanatics. It’s one of the ways they try to get into our heads. It’ll get easier to ignore once you see them execute your friends after promising quarter.”
The squad commander addresses the survivors.
“We leave the dead until we get reinforcements from HQ. For now we have to go after the one that got away and put him down. Our orders were explicit in stating we show no mercy to them, even if they run. Sergeant, inform HQ we’re going into pursuit.”
“Comms are still down, sir.”
“Damn it! This changes nothing. We still push ahead. Move out!”
After tracking the enemy soldier’s footprints for an hour, they come to a clearing in the forest.
“Sir, up ahead.” the sergeant points to where the footprints lead.
“This is impossible. How could they have put this up right under our noses?”
“Doesn’t look like it’s complete, sir.”
“But that is a fully operational tree! How could they have done this so close to HQ? We need to get out of here right now.”
“They've got shield bearers deployed here, sir!”
Enemy soldiers begin to pour from the facility and fire at the team.
The fire fight grows more intense with each second that passes.
“Sir, nothing's getting through that shield wall! We can’t win this!”
“Alright! We’re getting out of here! Let’s move!”
A piercing scream fills the air.
“We’ve got a problem!”
“It’s a witch!”
The witch moves the shield past one of the team members, cutting him off from the group.
“Take her out! Take her out now!” the squad commander screams.
They fire relentlessly at her, but the shield stops everything impacting on it.
“Don’t listen to her!” the squad commander keeps screaming. “Don’t listen to-”
“No! No!” he screams as he sits up.
“Where am I? Don’t kill me!”
“Oh honey, are you having those dreams again?” she calls from the water.
“Yeah, I guess I was.” He says, quickly forgetting the nightmare and taking in the scenery. The sun begins to set as a warm breeze blows across the beach.
“I’m sorry about the dreams, babe. I promise it isn't ruining our trip. This is the best vacation I’ve ever had and it’s all because of you.”
“I love every moment we spend together.” She says back. “You know I’ll always be there for you. I’d do anything for you.”
“I can’t believe we finally made it here. This is the greatest day of my life.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
He takes a deep breath and stares out to sea.
“I never want this moment to end.”
“Don’t let them hurt me…”
“Don’t let them hurt me...”
“What?! They can’t do that! They won’t!”
Pop! Pop! Pop!
“You’ll never take her away from me!”
The squad commander is forced to put his own man down.
He takes aim at the witch. "You bitch!"
“Rookie, get out of here. Now!”
“I don’t know- What’s going on?!” He stares wide eyed at the commander's firearm as ice spreads rapidly across it.
“I said get the hell out of here! Go! Go!”
As the rookie sprints away, the squad commander’s final thoughts are of the home he will never see again.
“I wish you had loved me more...” the witch says as she shatters his body.
The rookie takes cover while more soldiers swarm the area. He knows it is futile to escape and prepares to make a final stand.
“Brother! There is no need to fight! Embrace us and join the harmony.” they call at him.
“Bastards…” His heart pounding, he gets ready to make his final move.
But ice begins to spread rapidly over his weapon.
“No! No no no!”
He quickly tosses it before it can touch him.
“There is nothing to fear, beloved. We have never meant you any harm.”
“You have been loved since the very beginning. You’re safe now.” Her voice, both comforting and cold, permeates the air.
“Rejoice, beloved. Salvation is at hand. Fimbulwinter has begun.”
A cold wind rips through the forest, filling it with snow and the smell of spruce trees. The rookie stares blankly at the witch, both captivated by her beauty and seething with hatred towards her.
