A Destiny Unfulfilled

Soldier: "Commander, we've confirmed this is the final holdout of the enemy, there are no other survivors."
Commander: "Excellent, now we eliminate them."
Soldier: "But, they've holed themselves up in a storage room, and appear to be trying to signal for help."
Commander: "Then we've no time to lose."
Moments later:
Commander: "Alright men, we kill these last troops and the facility is ours!"
Demolitions expert: "Now, just let me secure the charge..."
Demolitions expert: "There!"
Demolitions expert: "3... 2... 1..." 'beep'
Booom!
As soon as the door exploded, the team unleashed a hail of deadly laser shots into the storage room and it's occupants.
And almost as quickly the PLA soldiers returned fire.
'swoosh'
Soldier: "Look out!"
Ka-Boooom!
And in an instant, three soldiers and the commander were killed by the rocket.
Commander: "Ugh, what happened?"
Commander: "Wait, didn't I die?"
???: "Indeed you did."
Commander: "Um, who are you?"
???: "Who I am is irrelevant, Thalia Ahrendue."
Thalia: "How do you know my name?"
???: "I have my means."
Thalia: "Also, where are we?"
???: "A vast expanse of nothingness that stretches on for an eternity, better known as the beige carpet."
???: "Now listen. I've brought you here for a reason. There is a land that has been embroiled in conflict and war for a great many years now. Recently a great battle took place that finally brought about peace, but at a high cost, as a noble warrior and great hero was slain in that battle. I am charging you with continuing his task and protecting that land against all manner of evil.
Thalia: "Surely you can't be serious."
???: "I am."
Thalia: "But what about Elves' war against the PLA?"
???: "None of that matters now. You died, remember?"
???: "Here is your weapon."
Thalia: "A poleaxe?"
???: "Correct. Your task is a simple one, I trust you will not fail."
'fwoosh!'
Thalia: "Hmm... Greener than I expected, but I guess it will do."
Thalia: "Well, I should discover more about this place first. Surely there are some locals nearby."
