Thiefs in the Night (TBOV 1)

Vymbourne, late at night.

Image

"Shhh!"
"no u"

Image

"warrick?"
"..."
"Warrick!"
"What?"
"You sure this is the right key?"
"Ofcourse. Try flipping it. Hurry up!"
"Got it!"
"Shhh!"

Image

Warrick and Hanzo grab the dark wooden chest from the cellars and carry it outside.

Meanwhile, Gilbert hears a rustling...

Image

"Who is it?"

Image

"AHHH"
Gilbert is struck by a sword. He falls to the ground while Warrick readies his axe.

Image

"Bullocks! Who the hell do you think you are!? Gilbert, get up!"

Image

"Surrender the coffre and you will not be harmed!"
"Is that... french?"
"Oui."
"How about you surrender, then?"
"Gaspard commands it. Prepare to die!"

Image

Before the two parties can resort to senseless violence, they are alarmed by the french soldier.
"We got couronniers incoming!"

Image

The french make a run for it and disappear just as the shiny men round the corner. Before he has a chance to do anything, Warrick stares right into the eyes of commander Lennox of the Royal Guard.

"Well, well, well..."

A Servant in Foreign Lands (TBOV 2)

The next morning...

Image

"Heads up, here they come"

Image

"Warrick. Where is Cedric, your chief?"
"Running an errand, I'm afraid. He'll be back by noon."

Image

"Fair enough. Last night, a group of bandits broke into the Armoury and tried to steal the payroll for an entire Royal Sector. One of your men was injured at the scene. Do you care to explain what the hell happened?"

Image

"Gilbert is doing fine, by the way. Thanks for asking. But... Eh... We heard a noise and decided to check it out. The bandits attacked us, your shinies showed up, and... that's it.
"Any idea who they were?"

Image

"I was hoping you could tell me. They spoke french and mentioned someone named Gaspard. That mean anything to you?"

Image

Alderic goes silent, his eyes drift off towards the horizon.

...

Then he pulls himself together again, shaking off the feeling that washed over him.

"No, never heard of em'. Anything else?"

"Good thing we showed up though, eh?"

Image

"You're lucky I don't sue you for property damage from bleeding all over the Royal Pavement. Next time, capture these c*nts! You hear me?"

...

"When will your men be back on duty? I pay you good money to guard this section of the wall."

Image

"Geez, Alderic, relax. Gilbert will be back in no time."

...

"Speaking of good money, have you talked to the Black Falcon clan yet?"

Image

"Mind your own damn business. And get some rest, your eyes look sleepy. Good day."
"Fucks sake. Good day."

A Wise Mans Ink (TBOV 3)

Meanwhile...

Image

"Ahhhh, Cedric. You come here without treasure. Did you fail?"
"Jagga, how very green to see you. Unfortunately, we don't have the treasure yet."

Image

"Did you forget that you cost me one of my finest skelemancers when you traveled to Brikburgh? You are still in my debt!"

Image

"Yes, I remember. I also remember that your orcs were at the Armoury before us, but that they took the wrong ch..."
"Carefull..."
"Anyway, I come before you with a plan."
"Go on."
"Vymbourne is vulnerable. The men guarding the walls are unhappy. They..."
"Brootals are unhappy too. Are we vulnerable!?"

Image

"Listen, here is a map, it has all the information. With your warriors, and my plan, we'll be rich!"
"Vymbourne will fall and Í will be rich. And then you... I never want to smell you again"

Image

"Works for me. Tell your orcs to look out for the red banners. My men will let you pass in exchange for their safety. I must go now. Good day."
"Good day, Lord Bull."

Image

Cedric leaves and Jagga studies the map for a few moments. He then turns to the orcish soldier.

"Send a message to Gaspard Lechevallier. Tell him we will collect his yellow briks. Vymbourne will fall, and the Ox will trouble us no more."

A Coward Has No Scar (TBOV 4)

Image

"Good day Lord Bull!"
"Greetings, Rodri."

Image

"Rodri."
"Yes sir?"
"Would you like to see something thrilling?"
"Absolutely."
"Good lad. Follow me."

Image

"Remember how I told you that the Black Falcon Clan had been recruiting farmers into their ranks?"
"Yes, and I didn't believe that."
"I know, but it's true. They enlisted them. And those farmers are standing guard today. All 3 of them."

Image

"Ehh, I don't know, Lord Bull. They look like fine soldiers to me. Helmets and all. So y'know..."
"Their helmets are not even shiny!"
"Maybe they can't afford shiny helmets."

Image

"Can't afford!? Alderic is paying the Black Falcons good money to guard this gatehouse. That's the whole problem!"
"What is?"

Image

"Look, I'll prove it to you, boy. I happen to know that a certain group of bandits will be raiding a certain stack of gold. Today. We'll see how those feathered peasants hold up in battle."

Image

"Aw geez Rick, those guys look mean. Do you have anything to do with this, Lord Bull?"
"It's Cedric. Just watch, Rodri."

Plant Rice When the Ground is Ready (TBOV 5)

Shortly after the assault at the gatehouse, Uldar Eremengard is awarded the title of Lord and is chosen to be the new leader of the Black Falcon Clan.

One of the first things he does as Lord Eremengard is to invite Lord Bull for a casual stroll around Vymbourne.

Image

Congratulations on your promotion, Uldar!
Thank you kindly, Cedric.

Image

So, is it true that they stripped that old fart Garham of his Lords title because he was taking a shit during the latest raid?
Who told you that? Sir Garham was a fine Lord, and a fine soldier of the Black Falcons still. But our aim is to continuously improve and rejuvenate.
I find that hard to believe.
Is that so? Do you have a problem with the Black Falcons? Do we have a problem?

Image

I don't. I had a problem, with Lord Garham.
How so?
The old man didn't try hard enough, in my opinion. Whenever something was up, he would always have an excuse. And never have I witnessed a novel idea originate from his mind. If we want to keep Vymbourne safe, we need to be flexible. We're in a storm and we must learn how to bend. Like a tree. Sometimes that means doing something other than recruiting farmers to fill our ranks...
They are fine men.
I know. Look. What I'm saying is, you have to be tactical when the orcs are out for war. Why don't we talk to them? Why don't we sabbotage them? Why don't we satisfy them with a quick win so they piss off? Nobody is talking about this stuff!

Image

I see. Never have I heard someone speak so passionate about the castles defense.
Vymbourne means everything to me.

Image

The two men chat a little, before returning to the subject of the raid.

So, Garham was taking a shit then?
Damn straight. His bowels kept him occupied the entire battle. You should've seen Alderics face when we gave him the report.
Brutal.

Image

Cedric, one more thing. Next time you send a group of bandits my way, give me a heads up. I'd like to know when I can expect the bonus income from claiming the Keepers Honour.
I have no idea what you are talking about.

With a faint smile on both their faces, the two lords part ways.

Honesty is the Best Policy (TBOV 6)

Uldar and Cedric celebrate their victory over Alderic at the Boulder that same evening.

Image

That was one heck of a fight today. Well done. Victories like this make my men proud to be Vymbournians. Cheers!
Cheers. And it’s true, morale on the wall is high once again. Quite the difference from a few weeks ago. All this action really did turn the place around.

Image

I do think that Alderic might be losing his mind. Ever since he returned from Brikburgh it seems. He’s so desperately trying to protect us. But if his stories about brikwars are true, there’s no way he can keep everyone safe.
That would drive me nuts as well. But we might seriously need Alderic and his men in the days to come. A little falcon told me that Jagga is preparing a major attack.

Image

Major attack? No way. There’s not enough brootalz in these parts to pull that off. My guess is that Jagga is just out for some easy loot, and then he’ll leave us alone. I’ve already nudged him in the right direction.

Image

What loot?
I’ve always suspected that the Royals were hiding elvish treasure at the Armoury. And then when Jagga’s orcs attempted a raid, I was sure of it. My men tried to snatch the treasure from under his nose the following night, but we failed. I wanted that loot to pay off my debt to Jagga, sure, but mostly so that he would leave Vymbourne alone.

Image

I see. Did you send those thugs at the Gatehouse to make sure that we would keep Jagga’s orcs away from the treasure?
The opposite, in fact. I wanted to make sure that this time, they would be able to successfully raid the Armoury. You can imagine that I was quite bummed when your farmer recruits proved to be excellent fighters.

Image

Hmm, that figures. Well, I just hope we can learn to work together a little better from now on. This whole ordeal has been a little… counterproductive.
Counterproductive, sure. But is was fun. And we got some good fights out of it.
You’re right about that. Cheers.

An Ocean to an Ant (TBOV 7)

The next evening...

Image

Warrick, how is the arm?
Very good, chief. I went to see our Fixer, he patched me right up. Still a bit tingly.

Image

Alright. Listen. I’ve come to give you a heads up. Uldar knows what we’ve been up to recently. Raiding the Armoury, contacting those Skorpion Thugs, our business with Jagga. We’ll be working closer together with the Black Falcons in the times to come, so I wanted him to know.
Sounds good.

Image

There is one thing Uldar does not know.
And that is?
It’s that we have the elven treasure now.

Image

The loot that Jagga is after?
Exactly.

Image

Nice work.
This means I might be asking you to go on a little trip very soon. To see Jagga.
Can’t say I’m looking forward to that. But whatever you need.

Image

Good lad. Until then, let’s keep this between us, alright?
Ofcourse.
I’ll be in my quarters.

Image

As the sun sets, Warrick ponders the events of these past few weeks. Cedric has been very busy. No doubt because he wants what’s best for Vymbourne and his Bull soldiers. But could it be that the mighty Lord Bull is in over his head? Warrick sure hopes not.

The Bounds of Victory (TBOV 8 )

It's a slow day in Vymbourne as Lord Eremengard approaches one of the many adventurers visiting the city.

Image

Old One, I come to you for advice.

The horse promptly stops munching grass. While the rider moves his skeletal mouth to answer, the sound of his voice appears to originate from somewhere between him and his steed.

Let's hear it then, Young One.

Image

A mighty man in Vymbourne recently spoke these words: "every victory has it's bounds." What does this mean?
Interesting. I'd say that this person is just getting started on the Road to Ossum, knowingly or not. Realizing that the outcome of a battle, Victory or Defeat, does not matter in the grand scheme of things, is the first step. Only then can a minifig receive the true blessings of brikwars: violence and destruction.

... will this make him... a better knight?
Good or Bad, nobody really knows. As long as he's Ossum.

Image

I see. Thanks for your time, Old One. I'll leave you to your activities.
Not a problem, Youngling. Take care. And say hi to Tzan for me, him and I go way back.
