This topic is to help anyone new to anime on where to begin.

Basically these anime are considered by most people to be really good:
1. Cowboy Bebop (considered the best anime ever in the west)
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion (serious mecha show with deconstructionist themes) watch the series and THEN End of Evangelion and THEN the Rebuild films. It is one complete story despite what other may tell you.
3. Puella Magi Madoka Madoka (It's the Evangelion of the magical girl genre.)
4. Dragon Ball Z (come on you know it's awesome. Kai is a pretty good alternative)
5. Akira (badass cyberpunk movie)
6. Any film by Ghibli. Naussica, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away are probably the big three you want to watch first though.
7. FLCL (weird show about growing up? It's really popular and the art is good.)

From here you should probably figure out what genre you like and ask for recs from there. Any mods feel free to edit/ chime in.

Discuss live action Japanese special effects shows/films here. Godzilla, Ultraman, Garo, Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Gamora, etc. belong here. Do not discuss Western adaptations of homages such as Godzilla '98 and '14 or Pacific Rim.

Now, as life taste I will say that the first two posts in this thread are pretty good. The third one is a joke (the English dub of Sailor Moon is legendary).

Here are my recommendations. As Life Taste, my authority is absolute.

1. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. This is Evangelion's hip younger brother who was always really popular in school. Scratch said that it was very heartwarming.
2. Attack on Titan. I don't even need to tell you why. It got me and many others into anime.
3. Code Geass. This is the best glorious bastard anime. It tries to be several different genres at once and succeeds.
4. Fate/Zero. Scratch and mgb really liked it.
5. Aldnoah Zero. The best mecha anime made. If you don't like this one, Gurren Lagann or Evangelion, just give the genre up.
6. Welcome to the NHK. Ohe of the best portrayals of depression there is.You'll probably like it even if you hate anime.
7. Nichijou. A very silly and cute comedy.
8. Kaiji This anime is deeply critical of Japanese society, but it's also about gambling and addiction.
9. Tatami Galaxy Just watch it.
10. Steins;Gate. A slice of life science fiction conspiracy comedy drama anime that insert_blank also liked.
