Remember the first movie and how only half the movie was the plot? The other half of the movie was the detailed environment, the backdrop to the story. The immersion in the 2030's with the juxtaposition of futuristic hyper-tech alongside social problems and the filth of urban living that Section 9 navigates. The original movie was barely about Section 9, it was about the place they operated in. I feel like that sort of detached film could be made again. You're watching the Major figure out the puppet master situation and question her own humanity, sure, but you are also just looking at their world and being like, holy fuck this feels like it could be real. This is the future. Connected, high tech, grotesque.

I...tend to agree. For me, the environment in the original movie always struck me as profound. And it wasn't just in a "this could be real" kinda way. More like, for lack of a more detailed explanation right now, I saw in that movie what I saw in the world around me. The sense of silence, of pacing. GitS was always supposed to be more show and less tell.

This I agree on- but as the series has gone on longer and longer and the history that created the visual environment has become more fleshed out, the kinds of new stuff it can do shrink and the strain on disbelief grows.

IMO the strongest part of GitS is the 3rd world mysticism. It just oozes style.

I believe Anno is working on a series based on the manga. He drew the machine-monster things at the end of the movie which was his break-in to the animation industry.

Just watched Alien Nine. It's a really weird, 4 episode anime that's stylistically similiar to Evangelion. It's about puberty and freaky aliens, and the protagonist cries a lot. Would recommend.
